Infamousta brilliant actors, brilliant editing
SparkMore n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.
DipitySkillful an ambitious but ultimately ineffective debut endeavor.
Freeman This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
ozzieboo Well done. It is a thriller and a horror film in many ways but it mostly affected me as a meditation on obsession and our fear of/attraction to the unknown. I had seen the remake of this film years ago. The original is much better I think.
kodakManiac This film is truly one of the most fascinating cinematic experiences I've ever experienced. Its is so unique in its style and the way the story unfolds. It manages to balance both comedy and drama in a way few films have, before and after. The story makes you laugh in on scene, and completely creeps you out in the next, in unconventional ways. This story takes some very dark roads, very dark. With an ending that is so surprising, so original, yet so simple and easy. Its easily one of the best films I have seen in a very, very long time. No wonder why Stanley Kubrick thought The Vanishing was the most terrifying film he had ever seen. Watching this film equals three years in film school. A true masterpiece.
dentrex I read the synopsis, saw the description of the ending, and had to get a hold of this movie. Once I did, the slow pace of the beginning threw me off - brilliant - but the director then started unraveling things very slowly, each scene perfectly segues to the next. The flashback scenes are so well done, they explain so much about the killer with so little dialogue. The delivery, the mise en scene, geez it was overwhelming. The end was prolonged JUST enough, the pacing is really good. KUBRICK thought this was the scariest film - including his own The Shining - that he'd seen, and that tells you right off the bat how incredible this movie is. The suspense is notched up so slowly you don't even realize how wound up you are at the end! And this film is so good, you don't notice the horrid 80's euromusic in the score lol.
FilmCriticLalitRao Dutch film "The Vanishing" (Spoorloos) was released quietly in 1988 but its popularity has grown exponentially over the years. Its impact on mainstream cinema especially Hollywood has been tremendous as its director George Sluizer got a chance to direct American version of this film with established actors Jeff Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland. The reasons for liking "The Vanishing" could be many but anybody who has seen it would agree that it makes its way to viewers' hearts and minds as it portrays a highly intelligent criminal who keeps everybody guessing about his real motives. George Sluizer was able to extract excellent performances from all his leading actors especially from Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu who is truly unbelievable due to his profile of a 'common man' who bumps into most of us on a daily basis. 'Spoorloos' is recommended for those viewers who tend to forget their watches when they see an intelligent story unroll on screen. As there is no match for an original product, 'The Vanishing' continues to enjoy a new lease of life partially due to its discovery by new admirers of thriller cinema due to its release on DVD by Criterion collection.
