Reviews

Robert Joyner The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
Ariella Broughton It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Sienna-Rose Mclaughlin The movie really just wants to entertain people.
Janis One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
gwnightscream Fairuza Balk, Diana Rigg, Charlotte Rae and Tim Curry star in this 1986 fantasy based on the book. This tells of young girl, Mildred Hubble (Balk) who attends an academy for witches. She tries her best to become a good witch, but things go terribly wrong for her and she gets picked on by classmate, Ethel Hallow (Anna Kipling). Rigg (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) plays Miss Hardbroom, a teacher who is a bit tough on Mildred, Rae (The Facts of Life) plays duel roles as the Dean, Miss Cackle and her evil twin sister, Aggie who tries to take over the school and Curry (Legend) plays the grand wizard. I've liked this since I was a kid, It's basically Pre-Harry Potter, Balk & the cast are good in it and it's funny how Balk played a witch 10 years later in "The Craft." I recommend this 80's classic.
WakenPayne ...I mean, yes it's bad. But it is very easily watchable and actually gets a few things right. I found this through my brother who is a big Fairuza Balk fan and this is the guilty pleasure that he is PERSONALLY ASHAMED OF. So Drop Dead Fred is okay, Dead Hooker in a Trunk is okay, this is what he was personally ashamed of. I personally think that this is better than both movies but I can see to an extent why a 17 year old boy would find this a movie to be personally ashamed of liking if they like it at all.The plot of this movie is that Mildred Hubble is a girl at a school for witches and she never gets spells right and to some extent is accident prone. While she is trying to get something right she is bullied by the top of the class (I guess in this world the top of the class is the equivalent to the cool kid... In a school where they get to perform magic I can see why) and stumbles across a plot by the headmaster's twin sister to destroy the school and put it under her control. Now I did say that this movie got a few things right and I will say them now. I think Mildred is actually a character to feel sympathy for. I mean yes, her being accident prone most of the time is a little bit much but I find her a likable character. I also liked some of the acting from people like Fairuza Balk and others but the only down point in the acting is that Charlotte Rae in her role as the villain (I word it like that because she plays 2 parts if you didn't get that vibe from my synopsis) is over the top.So what do I find wrong with this movie? Well, mainly my problem is basically whatever plot there is, it's disjointed to say the very least. The plot I described above isn't that well addressed and is only there for about half an hour.Which leads me to another point, you remember when I said that Charlotte Rae is over the top as a villain. She also is pretty un-menacing, even for a villain in a children's film. It literally takes Mildred one move to stop her and her henchmen.I also didn't really like the whole Terror tag thing. For a whole 4 minutes you are subjected to girls trying to scare each other. Maybe it's my age but that was really bad.So is there anything else to say about this movie? Maybe the fact that there is a hint that the filmmakers were actually trying to do something with the characters even if it doesn't really work. I haven't seen the TV show (well I did sit through one episode... I don't even remember how long ago). So if you just want to keep your kids occupied for 70 minutes then this movie is for you.
sweetlittlebella I been watching this movie for years. When I was little, I couldn't wait till Halloween to watch it. Its one of my favorites,I have watched this movie so many times that I know it Word for Word. I never did care for the TV series, looked to dumb. I would watch this movie with a friend of mine and we both would play out the parts, She got tongue twisted sometime, but not me. I love how the grand wizard comes in the end for Mildred, she is not the worst witch after all. And how Ethel Gets mad and pushes herself out of the crowd. My aunt used to sing Aggies song My little school, and add words to it, like stinky rotten, boy would I laugh. I am 23 and till this day i'll still pop that movie in say the parts as they go
lotrgirl2004 Other than the fact that it has magic and is at a boarding school it's really nothing like Harry Potter. It's an all girls school with an all female staff. There are no creatures other than bats and cats. And also they have a special Halloween celebration. Anyone who compares this movie to Harry Potter knows nothing about either story. It has great musical number that you can't help but sing along with. And I don't recall the use of wands.I love the character of Mildrid because she represents so many of use who have a hard time getting things right. And of course she goes through being teased by her classmates. The ending was great just because of the looks on everyone's faces.
