Just so...so bad

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

There is a plot synopsis on the back of the DVD cover, so it is hard to spoil the plot, which wasn't important. Raul Rudd plays Robert Hays in this spoof of Romantic comedies. There were lines which made me chuckle while there were boring predictable scenes like the one in the bar which was pointless and seemed endless. The scene with his grandmother could have been left out. Its crudeness lacked humor, especially since they did a similar scene just before that. The dialogue was bad by design, especially the end speech by Rudd, which in reality would have never worked. While the film has hit and miss humor, it is no "Airplane" which was an iconic film.I liked how they tried to work in metaphors which are overly used, especially in Indie films. I was amused by the film, had some chuckle out loud moments, and had some scenes making me look for the remote. No belly laughs. Worth renting for a laugh.Parental Guidance: F-bomb, comedy sex, no nudity.

This film tells the story of two couples having a dinner, discussing their relationship issues. One couple recounts how they met each other, and the circumstances were just like a romantic comedy."They Came Together" is really full of surprises. The vast number of recognisable faces is in itself a fun, giving viewers surprises regularly. The jokes are quite funny, actually I think the plot is funny because it is a deliberately bad film, that it is so bad that it becomes good. The scene of people suddenly taking out champagne glasses from under the conference table is very funny. And Amy Poehler taking a bowl of pasta from the floor in her shop is also funny. These scenes are so unlikely, yet they are funny just because of that. The ending is a big surprise as well, I did not see that question coming! I enjoyed watching "They Came Together".

I rarely stir myself to write reviews on here but the mega-low IMDb score has forced my hand, because this film is funny. Laugh-out-loud funny, not just for part of the time, but consistently, brilliantly funny. There are some extremely odd comments on here, with people seeming not to get the joke at all, and I have to say I find that perplexing. From minute one it tears into every rom-com cliché with glee. It is to the romantic comedy what The Naked Gun is to the detective drama, and on a first viewing I found it almost as funny. It helps that the leads are naturally very likable, very comedically gifted actors. I've been a fan of Rudd's for a long time and Poehler matches him here. Some of the targets they are shooting at are very soft ones (poking ANY fun at When Harry Met Sally will always leave you standing on very thin ice), and there are a few budget restrictions which keep it from being a movie classic - some folk have rightly pointed out that it is basically a series of sketches - but it IS the funniest film I have seen in a year, and as it's a comedy and that's kind of its job, I feel obliged to gift it a slightly inflated 9 out of 10. A hoot.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this movie. It seemed like it was going to poke fun at romcoms while still maintaining a grounded story and genuine romance. Yeah, that's not the case at all. They Came Together is the epitome of meta comedy. It never takes itself seriously for a second and continues to barrage you with joke after joke after joke, spoofing the same romantic comedy tropes we've seen a billion times. It may sound repetitive, and it can be at times (some scenes go on for too long) but it's also the most refreshing satire I've seen in a long time. There is no point where you should be analyzing the plot to this movie. If you do, you're an idiot. Simple as that. The movie is one long joke - if you want some artistic integrity in your comedies then this movie is not for you. If you love to laugh at the expense of cheesy romcoms, then you're in for a real treat. The acting in this movie is superb, if the all-star cast didn't already give that away. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler are ace in their roles as lead caricatures, and even during the dumber moments they still give believable performances. Let me clarify: you don't believe anything the characters are doing are real, but they're convincing enough in their roles that you understand exactly what it is they're making fun of and it works wonders. Christopher Meloni is another highlight - he plays a Don Draper-esque boss that all the corporate drones follow blindly (with Paul Rudd's character being the obvious exception). I never viewed him as a comedic figure but he absolutely owns this role; the only other actor I can see doing this role justice is Jon Hamm himself. Other standouts include Jason Mantzoukas as Bob, the friendly awkward coworker, and Ed Helms playing the cliché douchebag that the girl falls for even though he's clearly wrong for her. The best part about They Came Together is that it's wholly self-aware. It breaks the fourth wall more than a few times, and it doesn't take you out of the movie because you're never really in the movie to begin with. It's like watching an 80 minute long sketch comedy held together by a flimsy love plot. Another positive is that the movie never gets boring. It's so short and so eccentric you don't have time to get bored. Again, it's joke after joke after joke - most of them are cheesy, some are crude, but they're all so relatable as romantic comedy jabs that you can't help but laugh at the stupidity. They Came Together is definitely not for everyone - if you're looking for substance, go somewhere else. This movie is pure satire from beginning to end. Nothing is believable, and none of it should be. It's a spoof movie at its core, standing head-and-shoulders above other spoofs due to great writing and a brilliant cast. Why this has such a low score on IMDb I will never know. I got everything I wanted from this movie and more. Throw in a few surprise cameos and you have yourself a winner.
