Protraph Lack of good storyline.
SeeQuant Blending excellent reporting and strong storytelling, this is a disturbing film truly stranger than fiction
Sienna-Rose Mclaughlin The movie really just wants to entertain people.
Hattie I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
creatureofthereel Quite possibly now should be listed under Horror, it's scary how close this could be to how the world is currently. I wonder if this film was to go the way all films seem to be going and get remade, would it scare people as to how products are marketed? And are the government deciding what you buy and use?. Watching it now seems to make me wonder how fitting it is in today's society. If it wasn't aliens trying to rule the earth it could easily be the government...Oooh conspiracy theories...Lizards...Anyway, They Live is an excellent movie with some fantastic acting by Roddy Piper and Keith David. The soundtrack fits in perfectly, which is one thing John Carpenter always seems to get right in his films. I highly recommend that after you watch They Live then check out the trivia here on IMDB, some of the points are wonderful. Obey.Consume.
Pjtaylor-96-138044 'They Live (1988)' is a satire of consumerism and commercialism by way of an over-the-top, ass-kicking science-fiction thriller but bizarrely spends far too long mulling about alongside its initially unambitious protagonist as he goes about his day-to-day drifter business. This leads to a slow first half that ultimately drags down the much more fun and ostentatious sequences that come later on. When it works, it works well and is an entertaining pseudo-exploitation flick with some great fight-scenes - including a fantastically unnecessary, surprisingly brutal yet slightly camp alleyway brawl over a pair of sunglasses - and a proper sense of its underlying satirical humour. You know it isn't taking itself too seriously and can therefore laugh alongside it rather than directly at it. 7/10
ants-09725 I don't usually write reviews but i must warn people about this movie. I am a fan of John Carpenter, The Fog and The Thing are both excellent movies, this is terrible. The title of the movie.. They Live maybe could have been "They live along side us but they arnt really doing anything". The film just doesn't go anywhere, i wish i had watched the x-files instead.Stay away!!!
denis888 This is a semi-forgotten classic of 1988, John Carpenter's lost gem, his acid attack on Reaganomics, consumerism and very clever Left Field critique of a society that thrives on TV and propaganda. The great late Roddy Piper plays Nada, a man who opens a terrible secret to himself and who becomes a powerful warrior for the right cause. Keith David plays his sidekick with his usual gusto, while Meg Foster provides a very brief but nevertheless awesome role of a traitor. You have to watch this excellent movie which shows a typical Alein Invasion thing at a very unusual glance, and what is a bit saddening here, is a lack of proper character development as well as some depth of plot. Anyway, this is a clever and subtle message which is clear and loud. The world of mindless indifference and languid self-liking lads to certain abysses and losses
