Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good
DipitySkillful an ambitious but ultimately ineffective debut endeavor.
mikenow-511-400540 Cory Finley's 2017 film debut Thoroughbreds its a piece of refined craft and style which manages to merge between thriller and black comedy in a very satisfying way, creating a dark tonal pitch which is played along a smart and kinda sorkinian dialgue who takes us inside the conflicted and dysfunctional mind of its characters. The Style its the Golden Rule If anything can be said about this movie its probably that it has an amazing amount of style in each one of its elements, starting by the story itself: the tale of a young pair of millennial yuppies who are trying to get rid of a despisable rich man who happens to be the stepfather of one of them. Since the beginning of the movie you can feel that it's going to be a weird but funny journey Following by the characters: Two young sophisticated ladies both intricately strange, whose own motivation is to get away with their plan no matter what, the both have two particular affected psyches which makes them a hell of a pair. And finally the aesthethical: the aesthtetic factor is one of the most importants, since the first.shot you can see and hear that wonderful universe of the bourgeoisie, which is filled with flaws under his perfection-like mask. Here is 7 reasons to watch Thoroughbreds: 1. Good Story 2. Neat Cinematography 3. Sardonic Tone 4. Fantastic Costumes 5. Crazy Music 6. Pretty Decent Acting 7. Lots and lots of Style
Johannesnk I'm not sure this movie classifies as a comedy film. It's a light movie, but it's more serious than funny if you ask me. I really love this indie movie, and I watched it because of Anya Taylor-Joy. She did phenomenal and so did Olivia Cooke.More indie films like this! (:
CinemaClown A bland, bleak & boring black comedy featuring characters without redeeming characteristics and moments without emotional stakes, Thoroughbreds is more a bummer than a stunner, for all that's good about it is the splendid camerawork & good performances from its talented cast. The story follows Lily & Amanda, two upper-class teenage girls who rekindle their friendship after years of growing apart, only for it to bring out one another's most destructive tendencies. The two ultimately decide to get rid of their problem and enlist the help of a drug dealer to help them out.Written & directed by Cory Finley in what's his directorial debut, Thoroughbreds begins on a promising note, for there's tension & chemistry in the first interaction between our leading ladies. Finley does well when it comes to staging the scene & moving the camera around but the drama is just flat & dreary.Camerawork is smooth, seamlessly sliding through the finely polished set pieces & sumptuous locations. The deadpan humour hits the spot, but only in bits n pieces. Editing fails to make the ride more riveting and while it allows the plot to simmer at its own pace, there are no rewards to reap in the end for taking that journey.Coming to the performances, Thoroughbreds packs a reliable cast in Anya Taylor-Joy, Olivia Cooke & Anton Yelchin and all of them play their depthless characters well. The interplay between them is interesting at times but not good enough to leave a lasting impression. Still, Cooke's emotionless act does stand out from the rest.On an overall scale, Thoroughbreds is as sterile & shallow as it is stark & stylish. Offering its viewers nothing to latch on to, it is a tediously paced & monotonously executed teen thriller that leaves you cold & indifferent to all that unfolds on the screen for 92 minutes. A technically refined but narratively hollow debut for Cory Finley.
westsideschl A relationship between two girls with quite different backgrounds and future paths. As one tutors the other you begin to wonder just who is tutoring whom (altering the life path), and then later on does it reverse back? Set mostly in the spacious grandiose home of the tutor are the engaging & challenging tête-à-têtes that turn out to be more than either bargained for. Well acted; intelligent raw dialogue
