Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

. . . HOOSIERS or UNCLE DREW is the greatest all-time basketball flick. Which side YOU'LL come down on probably depends upon whether you prefer your hoops old-style (with peach baskets and dribbling) or in the more humorous 21st Century mode, with "Preacher" (aka, "Chris Webber") still trying to call phantom last-second time outs. Though it's pretty easy to confuse HOOSIERS with HOSERS, the former offering from the 1900s featured some CHARIOTS OF FIRE-style music and slow-motion, but was ponderous and plodding enough to evoke baseball, as opposed to the fast-moving in-your-face urban slam-dunking America enjoys so much today. During a typical UNCLE DREW showing, my theater was rocking with gales of laughter no matter which way the wind was breaking. If you expect tear-jerking in your sports films, go see something taking place on the gridiron, such as BRIAN'S FLUTE or CONCUSSION. Certainly Shakespeare (were he writing tragedies in the mode of HAMLET and OTHELLO today) would have a lot to say about a pastime in which a recent study proved that upwards of 99% among the professional players will destroy their brains and shorten their lives by decades. But the upbeat, peppy UNCLE DREW is likely to make America forget the maudlin HOOSIERS downer in short order.

A film that was spawned from Pepsi Max commercials. Still a better idea than giving a show to the Geico cavemen. I liked the trailer for this film enough. I like Kyrie Irving as a player, so seeing him taking on acting as an old basketball legend was something I wanted to see. This film also sees two stars who recently blew up (Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery) in lead roles (well almost lead in Haddish's case). The film definitely has its problems and is a by the books underdog sports film but I found it really entertaining. The film is about a man named Dax who coaches a early Rucker Classic against his rival. However, this year the team that he has assembled has been taken by his competitor and he looks to recruit a new one. He recruits an old street basketball legend named Uncle Drew. Drew brings together a completely unlikely senior basketball team and they must learn how to co-exist and regain their athletic prowess to win the tournament.I liked the rag tag team of Reggie Miller, Shaq, Lisa Leslie, Chris Webber, and Nate Robinson. its so incredibly dumb but fun. You can't take any part of this film seriously as its ridiculous. Its fairly funny despite being a routine sports film with underdogs pressing against the odds and struggling to get along. Its nothing new and albeit its formulaic nature its easy to enjoy. The best part of this film is the actual basketball. The final game is fun to watch and packed with popping three pointers, dunks and alley oops. Its incredibly fun to watch especially if you have a love for the sport. I think Howery does well enough in a lead role although he does feel a little too comical at times. Overall, this is a dumb film no doubt, its just something you need to turn your brain off to and enjoy.6.5/10

A convoluted backstory leads to short chubby Dax recruiting old Uncle Drew and his team of fellow geriatric players to take part in a basketball tournament. This film ticks the following boxes - "sport", "comedy", "black". It also ticks the box "annoying noisy principal characters." And, for anyone who has seen Karate Kid, Rocky, or any other film featuring underdogs in a sporting scenario, it contains no surprises whatsoever. But it's always heartwarming to see the underdogs battling against the odds - in this case an annoying but funny Nick Kroll. It does feature some well known basketball players under prosthetics and wigs as the retired players. None of them can act to save their lives but, at that, they give better performance than a number of the non-sporting performers. Lil Rel Howery as Dax heads the list here with a performance of extreme annoyingness.

'UNCLE DREW': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)The hit sports comedy starring NBA legend Kyle Irving as the title character, based on a role he played in Pepsi Max commercials (in 2012). The film also costars former NBA stars Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and former WNBA star Lisa Leslie. Lil Rel Howery, Tiffany Haddish, Nick Kroll, Erica Ash and Mike Epps also costar in the movie. It was directed by Charles Stone III, and written by Jay Longino. The film tells the story of a group of elderly former basketball players who enter the Rucker Classic together, to recapture their glory days, with the help of an outcast loser coach. It's gotten mostly positive reviews from critics, and it's also a modest hit at the Box Office as well. I enjoyed it mostly. Dax (Howery) is a bullied and broke coach, who's still haunted by a game he blew years earlier. His longtime rival, Mookie (Kroll), steals Dax's team and his superficial girlfriend (Haddish). Then Dax meets streetball legend Uncle Drew (Irving), and he convinces the former basketball star to enter the Rucker Classic with him. The two go on a road trip together, to collect the rest of Uncle Drew's old elderly teammates. The movie is mostly amusing, from start to finish. It's definitely not hilarious (in my opinion), but it's always at least mildly funny (and amusing). The characters are likable and all worth rooting for (except for Kroll and Haddish obviously), but the film is extremely formulaic and unoriginal too. I'd still say it's mostly worth watching though, especially if you're a basketball fan (which I'm not).
