In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

Up is best known for its famous heart-wrenching ten minutes in the beginning of the movie, but the rest is filled with so much gold: a surreal setting and weird memorable characters, but made believable in Up's own universe. Just like the one Pinocchio made back in the day. Pixar has always bin a master of storytelling, and Up is no exeption. Carl Fredericksen is a grumpy old man who learns valuable lessons of friendship and trust, but discovers some unpleasant realities along the way. He meets some colourful characters on his journey, which may seem weird at first, but strangely enough fit into the universe the film creates. Up also features some comedic gold which surely will entertain audiences of all ages and does not stick awkwardly out. It fits in with the overall tone of the movie. I highly recommend Up to everyone out there.

Up demonstrates the importance of creativity, vision, intention, and especially the power of commitments made with like-minded spirits. The love Carl and Ellie felt for each other was palpable throughout the movie even without words, just music. Their love included trials and tribulations, including a child lost mid-pregnancy, which helped evoke a full spectrum of emotion around the theater.Ellie becomes sick and dies, leaving Carl, now an older man named Mr. Fredricksen, to live their adventure solo. He works to keep Ellie's spirit alive for himself with photos, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and imagined conversations—the same creative play that first brought them together.

I'm not particularly a fan of animated movies, but once settled in I can generally find them entertaining and worthwhile. The same can be said for "Up", the tale of an old widower curmudgeon who inadvertently hijacks a stowaway on his sky-bound home as it lifts off for a lifelong destination called Paradise Falls. The film is colorfully rendered, and if you're a guy who once might have been involved in Scouting at any level, you'll get a kick out of Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Ed Asner) sending his young hitchhiker Russell (voiced by Jordan Nagai) on a hopeless snipe hunt. When these things occur, I find myself in the underdog's corner, and when Russell finds a snipe and names him Kevin, the adventure really gets under way. It's too bad Carl's childhood hero turned out to be a villain, but that sets up the challenge of saving his new found friends from a diabolical, mad scientist, and find a way to get back home. Oh yeah, can't forget the cute canine pal along for the ride as well. His name is Dug, and is sort of the comedy relief character along with Kevin, and has a big hand (paw?) in making the save for the intrepid travelers. For it's efforts, "Up" won a Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars in 2010 against some worthy contenders. In it's own way, the film has something for young and old alike, and if you're feeling down for any reason at all, you might even find it up-lifting.
