Absolutely Fantastic

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

Wake Up Sid is a story about Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) who is a quintessentially Mumbai slacker boy - wealthy, lazy and completely lacking in focus. An unexpected meeting with Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma), a driven, bold and ambitious writer from Calcutta, results in summer of discoveries, realizations and coming of age. This is a fun and pleasing film to watch on a lazy afternoon. I wasn't paying much attention for the first hour because it is just too generic and I could guess what will happen next and next and next. Plus Ranbir Kapoor plays him bordering on "I want to give him a tight slap" territory. Sorry, that's the 'teacher' in me talking. I kept wanting the dramatic turn-around moment to hit and an hour in it hit, big time. Essentially the movie officially began for me from that moment on. What I didn't count on was how it became a different movie from that moment on. It's different good. Lots of little surprises put a smile on my face and I celebrated with the brat as he grows up. This is a movie of two halves and I love the second half a lot.

What a movie guys, its a treat to watch.. A complete entertainer that will suffice the taste buds of every generation.. A movie that i felt looked & felt so fresh even after 4 years of its release.. & that's where the débutant director & his team score... Its like poetry on celluloid with each frame, every moment conveying a story of its own., such is the fluidity &thought making gone in its formulation... With crisp editing, the movie unfolds & carves magic over the viewer..,A coming of age film which takes us through the life of a loser & aimless boy & his metamorphosis into an independent man.. A movie that packs in it do many lessons of life, portraying life, love & some, nay but many endearing moments... Wait, this ain't just the director & his team but also the rock star of our generation who by his brilliant screen presence simply lights up every frame.. He has that magical essence that makes the flick all the more watchable & guess no one else possibly could have done what he has... Be it his arrogance, naughty smile, caring nature or exuberance, he portrays every emotion in the book with much ease.. He lives his role simply.. Watching him apologize to his father or loving his mom or striking chemistry with his female colleague, i mean it comes naturally to him... Superlative. Next up is the underrated actress who matches ranbir step by step & though one may get the feel that she was miscast but there she proves you wrong by her awesome performance, her expressive face .. Also worth mentioning are small roles played by his two friends & anupam kher as his father & supriya pathak as the mother.. The last two excel in the short screen time alloted & give us some endearing on screen moments & lines.. Especially when the illiterate mother trying to please her son by speaking in bad English & stating that may be in the process she hopes to become friends with her son.. Very touching..Ah, guess i have gone too long but last not the least is the superb work done in the background score & on the song 'iktara' by Amit Trivedi & sung such beautifully that one can still find people humming it.. He sets the mood by his work & proves that he is here to stay.. Good melodious music.. Photography too is top notch & catches the different moods if mumbai & the characters in true spirits... In all, this has & will stay as the cult classic modern movie in times to come.. Has to be seen to be believed.. Would like to end up with special mention of the silent genius in amit trivedi... almost all great Indian blockbusters have had a great musical hue associated to them n though the trio have composed a good one this time around though but the real & the mood -setter is the background score..watching d flick nth time I realized how beautifully d background score helps in taking the movie forward, with each emotion being attached a separate tone & a rhythm of its own... Breathtakiong work.....

Hindi Cinema has Witnessed Many Great Actors, right from Balraj Sahni, Dilip Kumar, Madan Puri, Amrish Puri, Pran, Jeevan, Sanjeev Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Govinda, Jackie Shroff, Ajay Devgn, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni, to name a few.Now add Ranbir Kapoor to that legendary list. In 'Wake Up Sid', Ranbir delivers a masterful, accurate performance, that is above any award, in my opinion. Its an embodiment, that has been handled with superb sensitivity & proficient understanding.'Wake Up Sid' tells the story of spoiled, careless rich-kid Sid Mehra, a college student who is taught the meaning of life by Aisha, an aspiring writer from Calcutta.'Wake Up Sid' is a terrific film. A film, that leaves behind a great moral, that's truly inspiring. Ayan Mukerji's Screenplay & Direction, both, are wonderfully constructed. 'Wake Up Sid' offers enlightenment along-with genuine, meaningful entertainment.Highly Recommended!

Really good movie, it is not the same ghisi-piti story that typically comes out of Bollywood. Most of the movie is great except for the start and end. Too much time is spend at the start to show Sid as an ultra irresponsible slacker, a child really. Then Aisha enter his life, as a friend. I thought Konkana did not fit Aisha, someone younger but still emotionally mature would have been a better fit, Deepika or Kangana would have worked much better. Konkana is a good actress, no doubt about that, but Ranbir-Konkana did not make a good pair, hardly any chemistry. Most of the story is predictable, but the screenplay is really well done and the direction is almost flawless. Ranbir is believable as Sid; though is probably much older, with his baby face he is able to pull it off. He is setting himself up to be typecast as a lover boy.The middle of the movie is where the entire team excels. Acting by Sid and his parents is top notch. The scene where he is taking pictures of his neighbor and their son is probably the best scene in the movie. So much is said and understood without any words. But the end is quite synthetic and artificial. I think the movie would have worked better if Konkana had just moved on from Kabir without the whole love angle with Sid. I felt too contrived; it would make more sense to have Aisha move on from Kabir and Sid continuing on with his friends with passion for his work and goals in life.
