This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

I actually, thoroughly enjoyed this film. That was until I saw the original and found out what a pathetic retelling this was on a certified classic. In some ways, it's hard to remake 70's films. The racial language alone would make the film an R, thrown in the suggestive sex and nudity and the PG-13 rating added to this title are now blown. The Villain in the remake is much more convincing and menacing, but the rock is less than believable playing the punk version of Joe Don Baker. For the sake of this movies and many others that Hollywood is attempting to retackle, son't be afraid to go all the way. Adults need strong film and there is no shame with an R rating.

The actors were fine, OK? But this movie is just a stupid mess of outrageous nonsense. If you have nothing better to do, don't even consider watching this groan-er. You're better off watching paint dry instead.Just a few examples (and these are spoilers): The family-owned mill, which was the major employer in town and the region, shuts down to build a cheating casino that also makes and sells drugs to kids.Huh?!?!? They shut down an on-going for-profit mill that was the MAJOR source of income for the region, to build a casino -- that needed patrons who had an income (from the mill?) to lose? The Rock, before he becomes sheriff, comes to the casino and spots the crap table croupier switching dice for a loaded pair. The result? The Rock gets beaten up to a pulp by the casino security thugs, in front of everybody else. And nobody cares. This ain't a good example of a casino's customer relations policy to keep people coming back. And, among others, the scene were the Rock's office (he's now the sheriff) gets massacred for around 15 minutes of movie time with machine gunfire and other mayhem. And NOBODY from town shows up? To see what's going on? To recognize the bad guys by sight? Meanwhile, the bad guys were laughing in front of God and everybody and didn't care if anyone was watching? Again, watching paint dry is a better option. Or maybe "My Mother the Car" reruns.

Dwayne Johnson does what he does best here, kicking butt and taking no nonsense from anybody (yeah, had to tone down the language here). You know exactly what you will get from a movie like this, and the movie, story and actors all deliver exactly as you would expect. That being said, then don't get me wrong. I am not saying that "Walking Tall" is a boring movie, far from it actually. It is an entertaining movie for what it is; a straight forward, generic and predictable action movie. And the emphasis is on action here, because there is a lot of it throughout the entire movie. You just simply lean back and unhook your mind and enjoy the ride. The story is about a former military guy named Chris (played by Dwayne Johnson) who returns to his hometown, only to find it very changed. The small town has fallen into a downward spiral fueled by drugs and gambling. Chris decides to take matters into his own hands and weed out the bad seeds."Walking Tall" actually does have some well-cast actors on the cast list, including Dwayne Johnson, Neal McDonough and Kevin Durand. If you enjoy a good action movie that is fast paced and can be watched even if severely hung over and just need something that your mind doesn't need to be present for, then "Walking Tall" is a good choice.

A classical set-up: The lost son returns to his home town and finds it in the hands of a bunch of criminals who owns the sheriff and his men. Actually, this movie is more a western than a western, and that does not work in my eyes.Things that could have happened in 1870 in terms of local wars and appointment of sheriffs are not working well in a modern context. I guess the movie is not supposed to be refined in any way and it certainly isn't. The good thing is that you can concentrate on something else while watching it without loosing any important content simply because there isn't any.
