Since the previous season, things have not gone well for our hero. He is sort of a mess. After a visit to see his daughter, his granddaughter, and her husband and his family, he stops at a bar/restaurant to have something to eat. The waiter is rude because it is near closing and ultimately asks if he can have a drink. Unfortunately, when he wakes up, he can't find his service pistol. It has been left at the bar and he can't remember much about it. The next day the gun has been returned to the precinct. He is suspended for four weeks and is now suspected of being an alcoholic by his superior. The case has to do with Linda's husband's father who was a hero in the war. It turns out that his feet may be made of clay and his wife begins to investigate. The father apparently was playing in deep water and disappears from time to time to deal with the political implications of a sailor's death, supposedly at the hands of the Russians. This is a startling episode. It will be interesting to see how Kurt handles his demons. There are several scenes where he blacks out. He almost loses his little granddaughter when he leaves her on a street in her stroller.

In 1982, during the Cold War a foreign submarine enters neutral Sweden's waters; it is cornered and depth charges are dropped but it manages to get away. During the operation a combat diver is killed; his body is found by his father, a local fisherman thirty years later. Meanwhile Wallander has been suspended after he got drunk and left his sidearm in a bar! This means he is free to help when his daughter Linda's father in law, Håkan von Enke goes missing. He was the naval officer in charge of looking for the submarine and it looks as if his disappearance could be linked to the discovery of the body. When Håkan's wife is run off the road and killed somebody wants people to think she had been turned by the Stasi when she's worked in East Germany but they Kurt continues his investigation and discovers that much of what people believed about the events of thirty years ago was a lie.I had thought that 'Wallander' had finished after the second series so was rather surprised to learn that a third series had been made. It was a welcome surprise though as Krister Henriksson's version of the character was my favourite. Things clearly haven't being going well for the character since the last series as he is more dishevelled than ever and is drinking and smoking heavily. The story was gripping with plenty of tense moments as well as a nice twist at the end. As well as Henriksson the rest of the cast perform well too; it seemed odd seeing somebody else playing Linda but Charlotta Jonsson does a decent job in the roll. Overall this is a good start to the third series; I hope the rest of the episodes are as good.

It's hard to see that films like this only gets minor points. If you look at all Swedish TV-series at IMDb- even those who have won International prizes, it's the same. People seems to hate them. This movie has been shown in Theaters in Sweden , so I guess that all the voters are Swedish. They seem to love bashing their own artists and films. Sad. This is as a good movie as the other Wallander films, a little more serious maybe. It's about an aging Wallander and some disappearance that have political consequences, Really good if you like spy films. Try it. And for my money Christer Henriksson are the real Wallander. Give it a chance and don't look at the points-board.
