Plot so thin, it passes unnoticed.

n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.

Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.

After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

Having already faced each other in fun sci-fi actioner The One (2001), Jason Statham and Jet Li went head-to-head once more (before eventually fighting side-by-side in The Expendables) in this 2007 action flick from director Philip G. Atwell. But as Edwin Starr once sang, 'War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing'. And Eddie was right on the money, 'cos War isn't even good for a 100+ minutes of mindlessly violent entertainment, the film wasting the talents of both of its stars with a tedious story-line and poorly handled action sequences, all accompanied by a horribly generic soundtrack.Statham plays tough cop Crawford, who is determined to catch Rogue (Li), the yakuza assassin responsible for the murder of his partner. This pedestrian plot offers up very few surprises, at least until its closing moments when it throws in a completely implausible twist that even M. Night Shyalaman would have consigned to the waste bin. Rapid editing and horrible camera-work turn every potentially exciting action scene into a mess of blurry visuals, with a high speed car chase being the worst example, no shot lasting for more than a second (trying to keep track of the vehicles is impossible). The expected spectacular showdown between the two stars never really occurs—in fact, neither star is really called upon to show what they are capable of, with Li's legendary martial arts skills given almost no screen-time.

Prior to the ending I rank this as a solid 7 / 10. I like the fact that it had good old fashion action and not a bunch o CGI stuff. Yes GCI is getting better but it still looks as fake as hell, especially when it comes to human action & fighting sequences...Anyway I liked the intro, the movie build up, how the plot progressed, everything. And I have to say with two solid stars like Jason and Jet I was intrigued that Jet would take up the bad guy role and that you had two big blockbuster actors opposite each other. To my knowledge Jet has never been "bested" in any movie, similar to Bruce Lee and there's a part of me who wanted to see him get his tail cooked. I like Jet and Jason both, but it's not very often you see a big blockbuster star have his lunch handed to him...Well, I figured it would work out such that there would be some big misunderstanding and Jet wasn't really the bad guy, then they'd join forces and kick some cooperative but, but I guess the writers saw that coming and threw another curve ball instead. The ending... I hated it, not because Jet was really Lone and I didn't see it coming, but because they made Jason this trader / sellout cop who gave up his partner & got him and his family killed, and then after ruined his marriage and made it his life's purpose to find this assassin who killed his partner when "he" was the guy who set that up in the first place, ah duh?!?!? I don't care if it was a ruff up vs. wife and child dead, it's all on him. Seriously no guy is going to play that card and then turn about and make it his life mission bring the assassin in, totally 100% stupid and more to the point non believable...

You might think that a movie that has both Jet Li and Jason Statham would have a lot of promise, especially since the movie managed to get the great Corey Yuen to choreograph the fight scenes. But the movie manages to be a big disappointment. Oh, the movie looks pretty slick and polished, and the script does have a couple of (so-so) twists. But despite my love of action films and being fans of the two stars, I wasn't terribly interested while watching the movie. There's surprisingly little martial arts action, and what there is is so badly directed and edited that it can't hold a candle to the expert martial arts found in Hong Kong films. In fact, the other action in the movie (gun battles, etc.) is also badly directed and edited. The screenplay is also substandard, with a slow-moving and pretty boring story, as well as there being no character we really sympathize with, at least before the last few minutes. Also, action fans will likely be annoyed that Li and Statham don't share that much screen time together. What a waste of talent!

War starts as two FBI agents Jack Crawford (Jason Statham) & Tom Lone (Terry Chen) confront an international assassin known only as Rogue, in a shootout Rogue is shot in the face by Tom & falls into the sea. Not long after Rogue finds Tom & kills him & his wife & baby, Crawford is devastated & vows revenge. Three years later in San Francisco & two opposing Japanese gangs, the Triads & the Yakuza are at war & the super smooth assassin Rogue (Jet Li) is at the center of it all as the bodies pile up, after having plastic surgery Ceawford is unsure of who Rogue is & works with the local police to get to the bottom of Rogue's involvement & try to prevent an all out war as two priceless gold horse statues seem to be at the center of everything but Crawford isn't the only one with revenge on his mind...Also known as Rogue Assassin in some countries this was directed by Philip G. Atwell this action crime thriller had the potential to be something great but it isn't, War wastes it's two great leading men & turns what could have been a great twist into into a silly gimmick. The whole film feels so routine, there's the standard FBI partners, one is killed & the other seeks revenge while his marriage & family life suffer. Seen it all before. The themes brought to the table by the Japoanese Triad & Yakuza angle like loyalty & the martial arts that all Japanese gangster seem to know is again standard fare seen in dozens of other better action thrillers. The attempts at drama with Crawford's relationship with his wife & the Triad & Yakuza's ancient rivalry is just weak & slows an already dull film down even more. The action set-pieces are disappointing too, Jet Li just walks around in a suit & looks cool but there's little action until the end & even then I am struggling to think of anything memorable. War just goes back & forward too much, the narrative is bitty with too many people in suits talking & acting hard. I understand that Rogue is trying to play both the Triads & Yakuza off each other for reasons revealed in a twist ending that could have been great if it were not sandwiched in the middle of a sword fight, the reveal has no dramatic pay-off & while the idea is quite clever the makers mess it up big time & to be frank the twist deserves to be in a better all round film. The character's are standard fare, the usual heroes & villains with nothing between, the dialogue is forgettable & as a whole War takes itself a bit too seriously.War really is second rate stuff considering it's talent, I love Jason Statham (not in a gay way) & think he's a great action film star who doesn't take himself seriously & has all the moves but he is wasted here & Jet Li is an incredible martial artist but again is wasted here with one or two average fights & nothing else. The two barely meet each other on screen & when they do it's rather bland & there's no chemistry there at all. It's hard to believe two of the biggest action film stars currently working made such an average & routine crime drama action thriller. War looks like a modern film with quick editing, flashy fast cars, cool fashions & the latest technology on display but it's all rather hollow & War just feels empty which is a shame as War should have been a lot better with it's two stars & a potentially great twist. With a supposed budget of about $25,000,000 this looks alright but it's nothing special, although set in San Francisco this was filmed in Vancouver in Canada. Previously Jet Li & Jason Statham appeared together in the enjoyable The One (2001) & will do again in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action film The Expendables (2010).War is a pretty bad action thriller that could have been great but for a wasted twist ending & the wasted action star potential of Statham & Li I wouldn't even call War average, not something I would want to see again.
