Zane Grey bets he can catch a fish bigger than one he sees at Watsons Bay. He hears about a large shark, nicknamed "white death", terrorising the Queensland coast and goes to catch it. He is thwarted by the comic attempts of Newton Smith, a representative of the Wallanga Branch of Fish Protectors, to persuade Grey not to harm fish. There is also a romance between two young people. Eventually Grey manages to catch the shark.

ReaderKenka Let's be realistic.
Libramedi Intense, gripping, stylish and poignant
Matrixiole Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
davidanthony 40 years before Jaws, the Australian film industry produced White Death. Filmed off Hayman Island on the Great Barrier Reef, well known American writer and big game fisherman Zane Grey agreed to star in this sea-soaked adventure. The film looks a little creaky today, but is well worth watching for Grey's starring role, the Jaws-type storyline and the beautiful locales (though in black and white). Oldtimers in Proserpine and Bowen in North Queensland's beautiful Whitsunday region remember when Zane Grey came to town. Some such as the Lee family who ran charter boats from Proserpine worked on the film.
