Plantiana Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.
Greenes Please don't spend money on this.
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Calum Hutton It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
Ethan Now don't get me wrong I love a good classic 30's horror movie. However, despite the respect I have for its importance to the genre, it is in my opinion a wildly overrated film. Though Lugosi and the actors for the zombies are great, most of the other actors are insanely bad, though this is fairly forgivable as these actors were silent film actors who had lost fame. The characters are also never given the time to be developed, and the plot at times can feel rather rushed. I did find the idea of the movie to be interesting, but unfortunately the film makers never seem to fully explore this theme enough but rather rushed the story made it a bit hard for me to follow. Though the cinematography of the film was certainly original, it didn't work given the context of the scenes that they are used in. Overall, though I really wanted to enjoy White Zombie as I enjoy myself a good 30's horror movie, I couldn't help but feel disappointed and as a result give it 4/10 stars (2/5).
GManfred This picture has been on many times in the past and I always missed it. I'm glad to say I finally got to see it and was pleasantly surprised. Lots of horror pictures from this era are just schlock, but this had a pretty good story and holds your interest. I know, I know, but these are movie zombies, so for 70 minutes I suspended my disbelief and just went with it.A couple decide to get married on an island inhabited by zombies, but at the request of a 'good friend' who happens to live there. But who do you think is the Head of the Zombies? Of course, who else? There he is in all his creepy, sinister persona threatening, intimidating and glowering, and all in his unctuous, low key voice. This is one of the typecast Lugosi's best roles and is worth the price of admission - which in my case was a replay of the DVR I was smart enough to tape.
gwnightscream This 1932 horror film stars Bela Lugosi, Madge Bellamy, John Harron and Robert Frazer. This takes place in Haiti where we meet engaged couple, Neil (Harron) and Madeline (Bellamy) who are guests of plantation owner, Beaumont (Frazer) who is in love with Madeline. Lugosi (Dracula) plays Legendre, an evil, mill owner who turns people into zombie slaves by mind-control. Beaumont seeks help from Legendre to make Madeline love him, but Legendre tries to make her his slave instead. This starts OK, but falls kind of flat. It does have a spooky/eerie atmosphere at times and Lugosi has a great, creepy presence as usual. The film shares a similarity to "The Serpent and the Rainbow" and also has some of the same settings/locations as "Dracula." Horror fans may want to watch this at least once, but Lugosi is the only thing that makes it worthwhile in my opinion.
qmtv This movie is great. Not perfect, I would rate it B+, 9 out of 10 stars. 10 given for balance. The atmosphere, music, acting. The opening scene with the chanting funeral. The mill scene with the zombies and the creaking mill. Bela Lugosi is at his best here. Simple to the point. All the actors are great, especially Lugosi and the plantation owner. The zombie actors are great. The story is simple but works great. Worst part is the comic of the old guy. There's also some cinematographic problems. But not too bad for an old movie. I've seen this movie 3 time and read all reviews. This movie has serious mood and must be seen. It's like an masterpiece painting.
