Synopsis

Untrusting of outside law enforcement, some Amish in Lancaster County, PA have for many years regularly turned to a small organized group of men for protection and justice. The 2006 School shootings in Lancaster County during which five young Amish girls were killed and five more seriously injured by a non-Amish milk truck driver brought to the nation's attention the vulnerabilities of the Amish community, and their need for continued protection.

Tedfoldol everything you have heard about this movie is true.
Borserie it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Salubfoto It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
Truitt Detra Okay so let me get this clear I live in A county very close to Lancaster county. And it is very close to where the show "Amish mafia" is produced. The show has some very stupid things on I must say myself but...not all of the people on it are. for example Alan Beiler is a criminal. He was actually in a incident where he had been caught with drugs in his car and yes he tried to run from the cops. But I mus say some of the stuff on that show is entirely fake. A few reason are. 1 Amish do not like being captured on camera (the whole time of the show they are on camera) 2 please tell me that everybody knows that Amish do not drive cars(they strictly only drive horse buggy's. And I have a Amish friend I had asked him about he show and he said "no I have never heard of it" the after I had him watch a show off it and he was just completely blown away because he said that it is pretty much all fake. But I will admit...I watch the show because of the stupid humiliating things they do it just makes me wonder what is going through the producers head while they are making these scenes.
Dildog If you watch the show, various items are fully explained. If you are in the book, you were born Amish, but until you are baptized, technically you are not, which is how Lebanon Levi operates outside the rules. He is the necessary evil that the church allows to do their dirty work. Why would you watch a show about Amish farming and being boring? You wouldn't. So of course you are going to film thousands and thousands of hours of footage of people who have criminal records and show the most interesting parts of it. Shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos were all quite popular (and scripted with actors), but if you could capture similar drama live with any group, such as this group of Amish / Mennonites, why not? They are people/human with desires/greed/lust for power. Even the bishop put his own desires/needs ahead of the community. He made a deal with Levi to "take care of" Caleb in order to keep him away from his daughter, pretty much wiping clean all the other things he did in exchange for his personal wants/desires. Merlin is a delusional egomaniac who uses "God" as an excuse to attack Levi at every opportunity. Instead of staying in his own little kingdom, he treats his little friend Wayne like crap and attacks Levi for no reason, joins with Alan and the Kentucky rednecks to go after Levi. All Levi did to retaliate was talk to his Bishop. If he was smart, he and Wayne should join forces!Esther is a power-hungry bitch that would sell out her own brothers for power in a small community. John seems like he would do anything for her. Why not just leave the Amish? I can understand being scared of Freeman. Though not possessed, there is something certainly "off" about him. I am sure that some of the "re-enactments" are done with a lot more effects / pyrotechnics than the original event, but again, do you want to see a buggy explode or do you want to see a flame burn for hours and hours?
mauvemoonlight I don't care whether it's for real or not, and I don't see how it could be. However, the characters are a sheer delight to watch. It is highly entertaining.Esther - is sort of the "moll" as they used to call the girlfriend of the gangsters back in the real Mafia days.John - her brother - probably couldn't tie his own shoe laces without help.Jolin - is a fascinating character with those big, powerful guns.Alvin - a quiet, faithful 'foot soldier' Merlin - he's an enigma wrapped up in a riddle! And there are others equally interesting. But my absolutely favorite is Lebanon Levi. Lebanon is allegedly the leader of the Amish Mafia, but he gives the appearance of being a big, ol' teddy bear - even when he's hollering in John's face: "Don't be talking back!" There are more contradictions than you could shake a stick at on this show. One example of many is Merlin, who "talks" to God, and recently got shunned - yet he apparently has never been baptized or he couldn't possibly be doing the things he is shown doing. This is true for all of these people. If they were really Amish wouldn't they have to have either gotten baptized and joined the church or have had to leave the community by now? One would think so.Many things are never really explained - like how Jolin, a Mennonite, is able to speak the low German/Pennsylvania Dutch language the Amish speak. That is - if all of them are really speaking that language, since I frequently detect words that are definitely English when they are supposed to be speaking only Amish German. For entertainment value I think this show can't be beat.8 stars - and it just keeps getting better and better!
EdwaYou5 "Amish Mafia" is GREAT entertainment, cleverly written, and populated by a fascinating group of characters. Whether it is technically accurate or not, who cares? The episodes are mesmerizing. The juxtaposition of Amish simplicity (no electricity!!) and modern crime syndicate is truly "arresting." I especially enjoy the endless antics and escapades of John Freeman Schmuckler, Heir to the Mafia. John is always coming up with ways to earn money behind Levi's back; John's efforts always backfire, digging him deeper into debt. Jolin is the gold-hearted hero, but he is frustrated to be disrespected because of his Mennonite faith. Merlin is the really bad guy. Esther (John's sister) is the real brains and control behind the whole thing. I am looking forward to watching every episode of Season 2 and Season 3, and purchasing the DVD set of Season 1 (with additional footage and commentary by the cast, please!). This ingenious docuseries has a very loyal following. So what goes "clippity-clop, bang-bang, clippity-clop"? An Amish drive-by shooting! GREAT job by Hot Snakes Media. Thanks for bringing so much entertainment joy to me! :-)
