Cleveronix A different way of telling a story
Nessieldwi Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.
Payno I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Freeman This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
Dennis Moore When this show first aired in the 90s, I avoided it because I thought it looked bad. With it currently showing on Comet, I decided to give it a shot. The best way to describe this show is missed opportunity. There are story lines that don't come to fruition. At times the writing is good other times it seems like a 10 year old was creating the content. I think at least some of the blame can be placed on Sorbo. Rumor is he got a few of his writers fired which explains why it seems like the show had no real objective. What is done very well with this show are the characters. Trance, Harper, Beka, and Romie are great. I know some people have complaints with Harper, but every scifi show needs a smart ass techy. It just makes for fun character interactions. I really wish there had been a bit more romance on the show. Harper and Romie should have gotten together. Or maybe Trance... either way the lack of love interest leaves the show a bit hollow. Sorbo is serviceable as the lead, but he doesn't have enough charisma to make his audience care. I hate how he always seemed to use throw away phrases like "It's all Greek to me." I feel like this so is set soooooo far in the future that people wouldn't be saying stuff like that. I took issue with Tyr. His character was unnecessary and his story arc ultimately lead to nothing. The other big problem with Tyr is he's basically another badass like Sorbo. The ship really only needs one. Season 5 is absolute garbage.
Eryximachus What is incredible is this whole Magag character. Star Trek utopianism has always been about the fantasy of equality. The aliens were always analogies for races, particularly the purported black/white conflict in America. Now in 2018, with so many Asians and Hispanics, this 1960s message means very little. But what is odd is their "bad guy" is much worse than say, Klingons. They are veritable vampires who not only feed on humans but imbed their fertilized eggs into them. I'm unsure how anyone could watch this show and take the hilarious platitudes seriously. Most would say, exterminate them. The Nietzschean is an odd concept, particularly today when CRISPR technology is being used to actually genetically engineer humans. I'm not quite sure Nietzsche himself would believe genetic engineering is a good thing, with that whole overcoming thing he digs. There was a time in the 1960s leftists associated Nietzsche with Hitler, who never got around to implementing a eugenics program. That's funny too as them Nazis called it the Indiana Plan, after the very thorough eugenics program there. But I digress. Whoever wrote the initial plot, and I doubt that was Gene Roddenberry, did not understand Nietzsche. Overall, a mediocre show from another era. I don't think it would be very popular in today's multicultural world as the 1960s propaganda and Nietzschean philosophy will be unclear and most everyone would want the Magog exterminated.
lois-lane33 I thought I would watch this show due to the wife of Gene Roddenberry being part of the production team and the fact the show had apparently been one of Gene Roddenberry's unrealized projects during his lifetime. I read the synopsis before watching it and I found it a bit far fetched. I think the show works from the perspective of it being basically Star Trek in the year 4000 AD-but not 10,000 years into the future. For some fairly simple reasons-language has changed so much since the time of Shakespeare you could only imagine how unrecognizable language would be in 5000 years-never mind in 10,000 years. I watched the last season-or most of it-including the shows 100th episode-and it wasn't very hard to follow-maybe because I was watching it on DVD so I could see it without commercials which tend to ruin most good TV shows. I liked the acting although I found the lead maybe a bit dry. It was like watching a Star Trek show where Gene Roddenberry had indulged his fantasy of the future being a swashbuckling situation mores than in the original Star Trek show-where it was only a bit of a swashbuckling situation. The science was creative and the show was well paced-maybe with a bit too much in the way of bar fights though. I think its watchable-but maybe not quite genius.
rabid_wombat22 The good: quick wit, funny, action packed, (theres more fighting in 5 seasons than all of star trek combined) not overloaded with mindless sophistry, full of surprises and turn arounds, VERY original writing, very creative, good mysteries left for later, Lisa Ryder and Kevin Sorbo: GREAT acting. The bad: the other actors? Well they exist. Andromeda was plagued by BAD dialogue that often made no sense or went nowhere, fake tension between crewmembers at times for unbelievable reasons, terrible special effects (until season 5) worthy of a Super Nintendo possibly, not TV. Overuse of flashbacks for filler. (We didn't need to see Dillans first battle with Roddei like 30-40 different times) The explanations for what is happening in any given episode FLIES right by at warp speed before the viewer gets a chance to even think about it. The sets were rather low budget. The ship apparently can get bombarded with everything short of a nova bomb in most episodes with few consequences ever. (although on the last episode there was almost a hull breech, WOH THAT WAS CLOSE!) and the one episode where it does sustain heavy damage from the world ship PSP ripping a hole big enough through the middle of it to park several city buses, the ship later is full operational and ready for battle with no maintenance required and had a wax job I guess while they were waiting. (I guess they just don't build them like they used to) Overall though Andromeda lacked continuity. Spoiler alert: The 1st season, saving the commonwealth, which seemed like it was looking to be an all-show mission was accomplished rather quickly. They hit some kind of mysterious quota and VOILA PRESTO, a divided commonwealth is alive and well and bossing them around? The show takes a huge nosedive from then on in my opinion. Season 5 was meant to be diversionary, was dark, showing that the crew could survive being disbanded but with Dylans leadership, recapture the glory. And then POOF the show couldn't go on for reasons Im still trying to find out and ended abruptly without even showing the enemy fleet get wiped out which was promised. (not even so much as a whisper of a complaint from the abyss guy that is growling at them and making threats every season) It kinda reminded me of a writing a 10 page paper and once u got to that 10th page, u pretty much stopped wherever u were and went and got some pizza. Given more time and better writing, andromeda could've rivaled star trek as a gold standard in scifi. But it was still fun to watch and worthwhile. Thanks for reading.
