Synopsis

Becker is a dedicated, outspoken and talented doctor with a gruff exterior. While he tends to offend those who try to get close to him, he is extremely dedicated to his medical practice in the Bronx, N.Y., where he always goes the extra mile to help those in need. But Dr. John Becker looks at the world around him and sees a society gone mad, full of incongruities and just plain wrong thinking. And he has no qualms about saying anything that comes to mind – anything.

Blueghost I watched the first few seasons of Becker. I saw the premier, and then took in the rest of the first few seasons. I lost interest thereafter for some reason.Becker regards a man who sees only the negative, but ironically enough, lives a happy life in spite of his negativity and cantankerous outlook on things. Most of his observations on life are, from my point of view, fairly spot on. In this way Becker is my hero. But Becker can be abrasive because of his pessimism. Yet, even for all of his self inflicted jabs that he blames on the world, he has a heart of gold, and is willing and able to help people wherever and whenever. He is, after-all, a man of science, and a trained medical doctor.A single man who practices medicine, Becker perhaps reflects the middle aged single male whose life is pervaded by negativity because of his lack of female companionship. That's kind of the larger theme. Even so Becker manages a way to carry on.His embittered outlook is always tempered by his kindness and need to help others. It's innate in him. It's part of his genetic makeup. It's who he is, and what he is made of. His embittered outlook is surely his own perception, but it does not reflect his true nature; a man of good. That, and he's funny. His outrage at the world and its various foibles and shortcomings is what makes him likable and endearing, because people know he's just venting for lack of something to fulfill his life. That is the other part of the Becker equation.Check out a rerun, or rent the DVD if your interested. I think Becker caters to a certain kind of mindset and person, but you may find yourself liking him in spite of yourself.Enjoy.
howabominable Becker is one of those shows that nobody's ever heard of. I certainly hadn't. A year ago I watched around 5 minutes of the show, then changed the channel and didn't think about it, until recently when I managed to watch the first season of the show. Now, I'm not the kind of person who likes sitcoms. I HATE them with a passion, so much that when one's on I will go into a Beckerish rant about hospital dramas, and the junk most writers try to vomit into our televisions. But this show is remarkably hilarious. What I like best about it is the lack of drama (at least not so far). There isn't glaring sexual tension between the main characters, and they don't spend episode after episode pining after each other trying to make people care. It's just funny. It's made to make you laugh, and it WILL make you laugh. That's it, no strings attached. If you're looking for laughs, watch this show. If you're looking for a deep and intricate drama, go watch some other dumb show.Danson's delivery of his lines is spot on, and sometimes lines that wouldn't sound funny if you thought about them have you rolling on the floor. I can't wait to see future seasons of this show, I'm looking forward to it. This is the first sitcom I have been able to watch since I was twelve years old. The cast of characters is done perfectly. While I can't stand Bob, I love everyone else, they all have their own spin on everything to make an incredibly funny show.
paudio I liked Becker very much, that is, until they eliminated Reggie's character and replaced her with Chris. They also kinda changed Becker's character a bit. The result: the show lost its ratings and got canceled. With Reggie, Becker was the 'star' and the others were complimenting him --in a good way. With Chris, Becker --the smart, succinct, and sometimes politically incorrect character-- lost his uniqueness and became an ordinary character.Sometimes, in drama or comedy series, you don't need to have 'balance'. If the main character is strong and unique, it's enough to carry the whole series. By messing up with the main character, Becker lost it touch.
christopherandbarb I love this show. Strong characters who interact like real people in realistic situations. Ted Danson shows the opposite side of his role in Cheers, and is still funny as he**! Margaret is my favorite female character. She has a strong personality mixed with sweet-n-sour sauce. Without her, the office would probably turn to chaos. The only flaw I see is that Alex Desert wasn't trained properly on how to use a white cane. I know this because I am half blind, myself and use a white cane when walking in public. The props-master should know how to use the props that main characters need to use, and train the actors. Especially if it is a crucial part of the characters' persona.Besides that, I give "Becker" a 10.
