SnoopyStyle Failed baseball player Vince Cook (Anders Holm) runs his late father's gym Brooklyn Champions. He's planning to secretly sell it and move to Florida without telling his younger brother Matthew (Andy Favreau) who works there. Out of nowhere, Vince's ex Priya Patel (Mindy Kaling) shows up to introduce their 15 year old son Michael (J. J. Totah) whom he has never met. Michael is flamboyantly gay and set to start at a performing arts school in New York. He's leaving Cleveland and needs a place to stay while attending the school. Ruby McClure (Fortune Feimster), Britney Sundaram, Shabaz, and Uncle Bud are trainers at the gym. Dana (Ginger Gonzaga) is its bookkeeper.Mindy Kaling creates another show. This is basically a different workplace sitcom with an add gay teen story. The kid can be annoying at first but he does grow on me. His biggest difficulty is that he has no place at the gym and he is missing from half the show. Same can be said about the other people at the gym who cannot exist at the school. So the show is split in its construction. For Michael, I like episode five the most. He has actual connection with other students and there is a good story about his culture. The big problem is that Vince's whiteness has nothing to do with Michael's Indian cluelessness. It takes away from the joke that it's the fault of Vince's white camping. That story line would work fine if Michael had been adopted by white folks but he grew up with single mom Priya. It doesn't actually function for this show.Other problems include the lackluster brother, a less than hunky ex-jock lead, and cock blocking the female romantic potential. This show could work either as a workplace sitcom at the gym or as a teen comedy with a gay kid. I don't think it works as both. The brother is supposed to be a meathead but he can't be a blank. Anders Holm is good as a side character or part of an ensemble. I'm not sold on him as a lead. The workplace stuff slowly improves towards The Mindy Project level and that's good. The show got a little better but it's cancel after burning off its ten episode run. The premise is wrong and it never had a chance.
gizemdetas Yes, it might not have the best plot but I feel like this show didn't need that at all! The carachters and actors are very likeable and the overal mood of this show is great.
mariakungu Okey, lets be honest. The show isn't great and the actors aren't the best but the plot is wonderful! A gay half Indian kid? That's super rare. I love the connection between Michael and Vince even though it's a bit cheesy. The show has to continue. We can't fully judge when it only has 12 episodes! #weneedseason2
ryanpost-46799 Do not understand why their are all these bad reviews? This is probably one of the only Netflix productions where I have genuinely laughed! All the characters work together (can be quite cliche but what isn't) and the writing isn't terrible.I just assume that every Netflix production is watchable, but terrible and this show definitely raised the bar (for Netflix)
