Softwing
Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??

Brilliant and touching

I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.

This programme fell quite literally out of the blue. I had just finished watching Dirk Gently's and found myself at a loose end... Then I clicked on a recommended programme link and my fate was sealed...What followed was tears, OMGs, sheer blinckages, head shakes, WTFs and then unadulterated love... The cast, the setting, the background and more than anything, the sheer balls to the wall, all out storytelling.... Frack me, I'm at a loss for words...

The series is about a girl who seems to have been living under a rock, yet next to the Internet stream. So the character does have access to porn and Wikipedia, she is very interested in sex, yet she hold everything back a few years only for the sake of the audience. The jokes are forced. And there seems to be always some sort of pause after delivering a few jokes. A broken rhythm that makes the jokes even weirder.Contact me with Questions, Comments or Suggestions ryitfork @ bitmail.ch

This show could have been ruined by a heavy hand on the Director's controls, but it perfectly threads the gap between a bleak-and-gritty portrayal of London's working class (which it is not) and a zany, Poly Anna Utopia where's everything's perfect and nothing is permanent (which it also is not.) The lead actress, creator, and writer, Michaela Coel, is also spot on, ticking all the right boxes of "Hot," "Cute," "Silly," "Vulnerable," and -- yes -- even a deep-seated "Intelligent" with her character. She reminds of classic comediennes like Lucille Ball and pre-political-insanity Jenny McCarthy. I hope Netflix gives several more seasons.

Chewing Gum eventually loses its flavor! The bizarre, often crude and superficial examination of what happens when religion and sex collide. The effervescent and talented Michaela Coel stars, writes and is wholly responsible for this almost autobiographical take on her struggles with growing up into adulthood. It's 'Miranda' on speed in a much crappier neighborhood!Ms Coel ranges in appearance from a demure and frail Ghanian flower to grotesque New York drag queen very easily and it's these extremes in her life that make for a fast moving and very quirky situation comedy. The forced conflation of spiritual subservience and sexual discovery makes for uncomfortable viewing at times and there's no subtlety or pause in the action to allow the viewer to take a deep breath and examine what's happening. The series is helped, however, with good supporting characters, some swift editing and a frothy style of direction. This kind of TV clearly isn't aimed for the likes of old white codgers like me... but throughout all the noise and rough edges of this series, I predict that the world of entertainment will see a helluva lot more of Michaela Coel in the future.
