AniInterview Sorry, this movie sucks
SanEat A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
Payno I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
SILMARILLI The original series was a masterpiece ! ! ! What made it so was the science and even more so, the host. Carl Sagan was a master at drawing you into his world and filling you with wonder and awe. He brought science and the wonder of the universe to common man. He held your hand and lead you on a journey of discovery. I'll never forget when Sagan said "we are all made of star stuff."This new series falls short in everyway that really matters. Sure it is visually stunning and will appeal to the current MINDLESS Generation who think pacific rim and new avengers are good movies.Carl Sagan was a master orator Neil Tyson is not. Unlike Sagan, Tyson has no wonder in his voice does not draw you in. It is almost like he is trying to force look at things his way and not think for yourself. It felt like I was being lectured by a politician and not by a scientist. TYSON IS NOT SAGAN'S HEIR. What is even worse there was very little substance to the show, very little science. For the most part it was all about the scientist and not the science itself. Episode after episode hour after hour was like watching one scientist patting another scientist on the back. An entire episode was about one scientist struggling to get her theories accepted, but they never explained the theory, why it was important, or how it effects scientific thinking today. In simple terms this is a show about science patting itself on it back, it is science show for scientist, not for the common man. The cartoons used in some episodes where ridiculous. The really sad thing is due to the great visual effects and idiotic cartoons, you as an audience, are actually duped into thinking you actually learned something, instead you are brainwashed into thinking how great scientists are. It is really sad. Carl Sagan would be ashamed. Recently I received a dollar the word God was scratch out and replaced with science, so it read "IN SCIENCE WE TRUST" In the 1800's science declared there was nothing left to learn that science knew everything and nothing was left to be invented. 95% of all we know was discover after that. for decades Dinosaurs where to massive to walk so they must crawl on their bellies, OOPS got that wrong. Sixty miles an hour is the fastest a man can travel, any faster than that and human body would be ripped apart. two weeks latter a race car diver went faster. The science said sound barrier can't be broken, they forgot to tell Chuck Yeager when he broke it. It is the science that is important not the scientist for they are often wrong.
wittmann_todd I love Professor Tyson and have followed his work in all forums. He did a wonderful presentation in this series. His voice is easy to listen to and his mannerisms are animated enough for me to keep interest. But what is up with all the cartooning by Seth MacFarlane? I admire and respect Seth, but his contribution to this series severely distracted me and I thought it cheap and cheesy. I know a lot of people do not like generic dramatizations with actors, but at least they try to present a realistic picture of what the narration refers to and it is quite entertaining. If more series are going to use cartoon characters I simply refuse to watch them (PBS "The Greeks" did the same style of animation). The real actors I can relate to more than a cartoon character. And it shows integrity on taking history or physics in this case seriously. It was like watching "Family Guy" in a physics class....ridiculous...so much so that I could not stomach it after three episodes. I went back to the original Cosmos...which interestingly with a very few amendments still holds today.
oskarbjorn You wouldn't expect much from a series of documentaries, but this show is AMAZING. The original Cosmos from 1980 starring Carl Sagan was a very interesting voyage of space with brilliant soliloquizing from Carl. The new Cosmos is much more appealing largely due to the animated sequences and the rise of CG technology since the original. Firstly we have the new star of the show: Neil deGrasse Tyson. Neil, much like Carl, is very fitting for this role: they're both well- known astrophysicists and have very compelling voices for the narrations. Carl also had a very big influence on Neil's passion for science (as we see in the first episode). A new feature of the new Cosmos is to have animated sequences of the important scientists who are relevant to the episode's topic. It helps to tell the tale of how these men and women had such big influences. I also really liked the very rough and oldish stylized art style. One thing the new cosmos stole from the original and made much better was, the simple illustrations of very complex scientific concepts, which are every alien to things we as normal humans don't deal with on a regular basis. The newer version has jaw-dropping visual effects. This show is surely to inspire our generation to learn/teach about science. Especially from something to air on network television.
slicemaster I see here comparisons with Sagan's Cosmos and talks about dumbing it down etc. Thees series are just not for You. I found a little new info for myself as literate person in thees series. I just watched a show. It is a Show! An excellent one! It is targeted to people who not that interested in science in the first place. For people who find Sagan's Cosmos slow and boring. If You want something really new and really deep go read a book! Leave it show to a "normal" people. Tyson is on a frontier of a scientific literacy of main masses of people. And he doing a good job. He maybe not that of a scientists himself as somebody blame him. I don't care if he is not. I don't need him for that.I saw this series and it was fun, refreshing and inspiring. I still re watching it, when I want to get certain mood. I showed it to some "normal" people, and they stayed under impression and found it amusing. I strongly recommend it for a family watch.
