It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.

good film but with many flaws

Wow! What a bizarre film! Unfortunately the few funny moments there were were quite overshadowed by it's completely weird and random vibe throughout.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

I really did try my hardest to get into this show but each and every time I would just come away feeling bored and irritated. I find it tedious and completely lacking in subtlety and suspension. How it ever got beyond the commission stage is beyond me.Georgina 'Georgia' Lass ( Ellen Muth ) is an awkward cynical teenage girl whose life is empty and worthless. One day, she is crushed to death after being struck from a falling toilet bowl. She is then revived as a grim reaper by a team of fellow reapers who include the smug Rube ( Mandy Patatkin ), the dim-witted Mason ( Callum Blue ), the hard-hearted Roxy ( Jasmine Guy ) and the loud and vindictive Betty ( Rebecca Gayheart ).The death of Georgia has a profound affect on her parents, Joy ( Cynthia Stevenson ) and Clancy ( Greg Kean ), who relationship is on stony ground. Georgia's sister Reggie ( Britt McKillip ) is also affected by her sibling's death, so much so that she goes through a phase of stealing toilet seats for sometime thereafter.Ellen Muth irritated me as the gawky Georgia. She was devoid of any emotion whatsoever, and the rest of the cast were just plain boring. The biggest offender though in the cast was Mandy Patatkin as Rube. His character's arrogance and intolerance towards people was really too much for me. For instance, there was a scene in one episode where in an airport waiting area, his patience towards the repeated cries from a baby snapped, to which he loudly exclaimed: ''I'm gonna kill that fuckin' baby!''. That was my cue to stop watching. Two seasons were made, which was two too many for me. I'm sorry if you like the show and do not agree with my harsh review, but it really just did not click with me at all!

Dead like me was a quirky show that made me laugh at a dark side of life. 2 seasons was short, but I'm not sure I could have watched more. The characters simply were, no attempt to develop them was made and while I found it entertaining after 2 years I was OK there wasn't a third. It had some unique thing about it. Georgia's little sister torturing her parents was funny as was her generally cynical humor. One of those shows that I'm glad I got to stream for free because I wouldn't have watched it on TV and never have paid to see it specifically. But with it there to watch it was worth watching and gave me some laughs.

I think whats so successful about Dead Like Me is also why it was also so short lived. It has a highly underdeveloped mythology and Rube was the personification of this characteristic. That's was also why was was such an important character and loosing him was so devastating to the show. The flaw about the show is that it never really clearly defined the mythology (in Dead Like Me, its the concept of death and its intricacies, a really good example of clearly defined mythology is Inception and its ideas on dreams). And I often feel that Dead Like Me is also flawed since the mythology is not consistent. Clear indicators of underdeveloped mythology are shown in the initial episodes and how the questions they posed never get answered. For example, do trees, rocks, blah blah have souls? And the response was Rube says we just don't do it so I don't. I think one of the reasons the writers were so averse in defining these terms is because when you clearly define the mythology, you risk alienating viewers and the stories don't endure the test of time very well. But I have to say, I really loved the show and continue to re-watch it time and time again because it is so entertaining and so funny.

If someone is looking for a drama series close to SIX FEET UNDER, forget it. DEAD LIKE ME is so different like no other - except death, which is everywhere ;-) And I don't think that the show wants sentimentalism (maybe only in 2-3 episodes), because it is not a drama series in my eyes. Otherwise you could not easily skip 1-2 shows without feeling lost in seasons' plot.If you want a nice entertaining evening, relaxing without thinking afterward about the show - or cry, than you have to watch it. The show rewards you with a cute storyline and funny oral attacks. I have really enjoyed the whole show and especially season 2 - maybe because the acting did a very big step forward. Way better than season 1.And once again you cannot compare DEAD LIKE ME with SIX FEET UNDER (personal rate 9-10). For example you could mixed up the episodes of DEAD LIKE ME (especially on the second trial - if you do so). Today episode 10, tomorrow episode 2, end so on. With SIX FEET UNDER and it is not that easy to do so - also not if you see it through for a second time.
