Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??
Teddie Blake
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Lachlan Coulson
This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

I admit it, I'm a sucker for Ricky Gervais. That being said: this is one show you absolutely can not miss. His role as Derek is amazing. He is so fantastic in this you absolutely forget it's him. He is Derek, heartwarming, touching, funny, and innocently candid. Kerry Godliman's character is who we should all aspire to be. Each and every character has depth and is delightfully flawed. In their flaws you find their perfection. The show also sheds light on a very important group that doesn't get enough attention. I can't stress this enough: DON'T MISS DEREK! !

I'm quite astonished that it took me almost 4 years to come around to discovering this show. However I am glad I did, as a lot of details probably would've escaped my grasp. For me it was unexpected to discover that a show written by Ricky Gervais could be as lovely in sentiment as it was. Few of the main characters are nicely fulfilled, their personalities work really nice in concert with one another. As this was quite a short series it is of course open to criticism for the lack of backstories for the characters we just can't wait to fall in love with but at the end of the day everything works out fine. All in all "Derek" is a heartwarming TV show with a lot of wittiness, care and sense of community. Ricky Gervais is shockingly good at portraying someone with a developmental disorder, while at the same time proceeding to pour out empathy and kindness. Strongly recommend!

Derek is a sweet, hero-hearted near-comedy that breaks new ground in the mockumentary/sit-com format and that reveals Ricky Gervais as a dramatic actor of raging powers and infinite nuances.Seriously, Gervais is that extraordinary in this Netflix-produced 'streambox' series of only 14 episodes. Would Tom Hanks' performance as Forrest in Forrest Gump have been interesting if all the amazing Time magazine events hadn't befallen his character during the film? The most powerful testimony to how good Gervais is here as a modern day simpleton/mooncalf type is that his character is more watchable, more compelling than Hanks as Forrest was, and nothing exciting happens in terms of MacGuffin or set-up. Hopefully wide distribution of Derek will stop the 'muppet bad guy' script offers clogging Gervais' post box and start delivering him the serious dramatic and dramedy roles which Robin Williams, Bill Murray, and Steve Carrell earned. Because if Derek is any guide, Gervais could outpower and enquietude all of them.

I believe Ricky Gervais is an intelligent performer. This made watching him mimic a character with social and intellectual impairments somewhat painful. It reminded me of Sean Penn's foray into a similar quagmire in "I Am Sam". The simple reality is that impaired characters are who they are and do not travel much of an arc or get more complex. They can be lovable. They can be quirky. They can be humorous in sketch comedy. They cannot carry a series along a time line.To its credit, the show conveys accurately the bittersweet atmosphere of a small nursing home. This makes the series somewhat educational for the uninformed. The documentary format suits it, but to return to it from episode to episode is no delight. Just as visiting a real nursing home week in and week out is also no delight. I have had the experience. Those who are new to the trials of care of the very old may be intrigued and enlightened. Those who think that limited people have no value in society may be educated. Those who have lived the issues and are looking for comedy will probably be disappointed.
