Synopsis

Naota is a normal boy who kills some time with a normal girl by a stream that flows underneath a bridge. Nothing unusual happens in this town. The fact that Haruhara Haruko crashes into the main character with her Vespa a short while later and subsequently hits him over the head with her Rickenbacker 4003 bass guitar doesn’t really make any difference to any other day here. The at first glance unconnected, bizarre events that don’t seem to follow any pattern whatsoever don’t change anything about Naota’s boring life, either – because nothing incredible ever happens in this town.

Matcollis This Movie Can Only Be Described With One Word.
BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
Softwing Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??
Sexylocher Masterful Movie
rjkeefer It's a story about sex, drugs, rock & roll, robots, maids, magazines, baseball, hands, arson, puberty, more robots, cats, mopeds, jealousy, coming-of-age...and at the same time, none of that. It's more a rite of passage than anything else, something you have to be able to say you saw. If you don't 'get' it, that's cool, this show doesn't take itself seriously enough for that sort of thing. Soundtrack is absolutely awesome, The Pillows were and are fantastic. It doesn't have a point, and doesn't care about not having one.
PeaceGuard Well, I simply had to write a mini-review of this. I don't consider myself an 'anime fan', although I've seen around 30 of them in my life. I value ones like Death Note, Monster, Berserk, Hunter x Hunter, Shingeki No Kyojin, Hellsing Ultimate, Baccano etc. This one, it just does not convince me.It honestly was extremely hard for me to watch. Even though it only has 6 episodes, I was struggling to continue through a single one of them. I had to watch it in around 8 sessions and I usually watch multiple episodes at once. I am aware it's meant to be a parody, but it simply doesn't convince me. I agree that the visuals are superb even for current times and probably genius for back then. The music is also above average. But it only makes me more irritated. Because both the visuals and great audio could be used back then to tell us some original story. A real, new story. Not some kitsch random set of scenes supposedly aimed to be ironic. I do not agree about it being 'the essence of growing up' or a sensible parody of anything. I can see the references to Neon Genesis Evangelion, but a creation which is not sensible itself can't be considered a good parody either.I know there will be many who'll disagree. But I wanted to warn the ones who expect a real story not to count for it in this series' case. The title is quite adequate - coolly form and fooly essence.
rolfesam FLCL is a Japanese animated show that has no real plot to truly speak of. I mean there is of course a plot but that is no the real draw of FLCL, really that honor belongs to the animation and the characters of FLCL. The animation to this show is absurdly good. Like much better than an anime television show usually is. To put that more into context; anime is well known for using pretty much every trick in the book to use as little actual animation as possible to work on a bare bones budget and incredibly constrained time-hacks. FLCL does not do that. It is animated like a strange dream, fluid and beautiful in a way that just doesn't happen normally. Its a joy to watch. The characters are all interesting and act much differently than most other characters in traditional entertainment as they really don't seem to act on a certain drive to achieve some goal, instead they all just act upon feeling. Excitement, Loneliness, lust, anger, they just live how they feel and with animation backing them up their emotion can be sowed into their very reality with art style change or visual gags impossible to achieve in live-action. I would recommend this with a warning that since the show is about following emotion instead of logic I would like to acknowledge that this will turn a lot of people off the show, but I loved my time with it.
robert heinrich For some years I was convinced that Elfenlied was the best and most touching anime series ever produced. So I was quite disappointed to find out that the winner of the first American Anime Awards in 2007 was not my beloved Elfenlied (nor any other of my favourite animes), but a comedy named "Fooly Coolly" aka "FLCL" which I had never heard of until then. I decided to give it a try to find out what all that fuss was about...At first sight, FLCL overwhelms the viewer with its weirdness and seemingly random events. One example for this is the main character's head being clubbed repeatedly by a mysterious woman with an electric bass guitar. A little later a giant robot and some kind of alien creature grow out of his head and start fighting each other. One such WTF moment follows the other in breathtaking speed, underlined by an awesome soundtrack from the Japanese rock band "The Pillows".Therefore, when watching FLCL for the first time, you will most probably understand only a tiny bit (if anything) of the storyline. Many viewers will not be able to endure all the weirdness and stop watching after the first or second episode, I guess. And I am quite sure that the (few) negative reviews found here come from narrow-minded people who watched only one maybe two episodes, and then decided that FLCL is too random and whacky. Shame on them. But many others will be fascinated (like I was) by the beautifully psychedelic scenes and continue watching, if only to find out if it can get any weirder (believe me, it can!).And those who watch the whole series open minded and pay attention to the story will be rewarded by far more than having experienced an one- of-its-kind anime LSD trip - suddenly it will all make sense. Nearly every weird twist of the story is explained in later episodes, and in the end you will suddenly gain deep understanding, maybe even some kind of revelation. At some point you will realize that most of the crazy stuff which at first sight seemed to be mere eye candy and sick ideas randomly put together in fact are rather metaphors. And that parallel to all the craziness FLCL actually delivers an insightful story. If you don't get it the first time, don't bother and give it another try. FLCL is so dense and fast-paced that you might have to watch it multiple times to discover all the hidden puzzle pieces you need to understand it.In conclusion and retrospective, I still have a place in my heart for the above mentioned Elfenlied, and other great animes (like Mononoke, Nausicaä, Spirited Away to mention just some few), of course. And I still regard them as, well, best productions inside their sub-genre. But FLCL kind of transcends all of these, mostly since it cannot be nailed down to one specific subgenre. FLCL is all that manga/anime stands for. One of its own kind, as I said before. If you don't know it yet, you must give it a try. But maybe you should start with watching a trailer on youtube first to find out if you can cope with it's weirdness.
