purplehayez666 Definitely pulled me in. First time watch a psychological thriller
drshalabyjr This show doesn't make any sense with an idiotic plot mixed with terrible performance of the cast, it all adds up to one lousy show.
bestvisions Let me start off by saying that I've always found Naomi Watts to be a gifted and interesting actress. Not often enough has she been given a role that showcases her range and depth. Gypsy does that for her, and she soars in her performance. In her portrayal I alternately liked and disliked the character's actions. It is thought-provoking and makes you wonder and question appearances vs reality. I had high hopes that this series could be Naomi's "Big Little Lies". Sadly, it was not meant to be. The pacing is far too slow, the dialogue is much too talky and trivial at times, and honestly there are too many characters and sub-plots. The cast has a nearly 90/10 female to male ratio, and as such doesn't represent the real world. Yes, Brenda Vaccaro and Blythe Danner add their talents as experienced actresses. But the endless parade of neurotic minor characters starts to wear you down.Billy Crudup is excellent as usual and Karl Glusman is a gifted actor as well. But even then, their characters could have been more fully developed.Far too much of this series dwells on Sidney's character, and the elaboration of this relationship could have been significantly edited. And honestly, if I saw Sophie Cookson squint one more time, I was going to rename her character Melania. The lesbian affair was handled with the subtlety of a frying pan to the head. We get it already, and we don't need to devote so much time to a soft-core porn reenactment. Sophie Cookson is not to everyone's tastes, either in her acting abilities or in her appearance. Just as an action momentum was finally beginning to start, the series comes to it's unfinished conclusion. Netflix could have given the series a chance with a reworking of the script and a significant pairing down of the cast.
RHL Gypsy; yes, it certainly has had mixed reviews. Many absolutely love it and I emphatically fall into this category! It is a psychological drama and sometimes the pace is slow; but, this is to its enhancement because inherent tension and intrigue is thus increased! I have watched this series twice now; once on my own and later with my wife. Both times I loved its smouldering disquiet driven by the acting delivered by the superb cast (particularly but not exclusively NW and SC). Series one ends with so much more to resolve; clearly a second season (at least) was planned BUT Netflix have unequivocally bottled it! WHY, why, why? Great and innovative drama is relatively rare on TV but Netflix totally achieved this with Gypsy. BUT instead of taking a lead and ignoring the negative hype from over inflated and pompous 'media' critics (go on-line to see their dross) they've capitulated and axed a fantastic, creative, compelling and mesmerising drama; their shame!
