Synopsis

The charming and still-single Joey has struck out on his own and moved to Hollywood, hoping to truly make it as an actor. After reuniting with his high-strung sister Gina, Joey moves in with Michael, his 20-year-old genius nephew, who unbelievably is literally a rocket scientist. However, what Joey lacks in book smarts he makes up for with people smarts – making him the best new friend his nephew could ask for.

Reviews

StunnaKrypto Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.
RipDelight This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Gabriel Trofin Their chemistry is what made the show so great, but having just Joey in a show is a bit of a problem since, well, to be honest...he's stupid. I.e. he is so stupid that it's hard for us to imagine him succeeding at anything. The problem with this is that in "Joey" they change his character very much. He's smarter, a bit different. Still dumb, but not as dumb. And I just felt like I was watching an entirely new person. It wasn't Joey. It was Matt LeBlanc saying funny things every now and then.To be fair the show is watchable and entertaining. It has some good jokes. But it's a bit too obvious. The lines are too explosive and, yes, unrealistic. Every line of dialogue has a witty comeback remark, or is a setup for a joke.Like when Joey says he's too old to go to bars any more. "Plus, I have a problem telling if they're gay bars or not. By the way, if Ramone calls, I am not here!" It's too sudden, too obvious. Instead of feeling as if Joey's just stupid and innocent (as he was in "Friends"), I felt as if here he was really stretching to be obvious and make people laugh, which is actually a pretty big problem.Overall, a good show, but you can tell just by the opening credits that it's in a whole other world apart from "Friends."
brotatiharryaragorn One thing needs to be remembered that a spin off can never be compared with the original show. Similarly, Joey could not be compared to Friends. When Friends was over, Joey came as a lifesaver. I don't understand why people hate it, the show wasn't half bad. The ensemble cast for Joey worked just as well as Friends'. And Matt LeBlanc looked as adorable as ever. Loved the entire cast as well. Having said that, the second season doesn't work as good as the first, but it could have been better. But the story line was pretty good and was heading towards a definite ending. Another episode and Joey could have had a finished with a satisfying end. Give this show a try. It does preserve the spirit of Friend to a large extent, if not completely.
ComedyFan2010 After the very popular show Friends ended it took only two months before the spin off Joey aired, but unfortunately it didn't have the success a la Frasier and only lasted two seasons.I have a feeling a major problem was that it was so soon. Many fans just wanted Friends 2. I have watched it long time after the ending of Friends when all the wounds were healed, and yet I felt they could have made just a bit more Friends references. They actually did a few and it was great to see so much of Joey's Hugsy the Penguin, but at the same time it felt weird that he seemed to miss more the snow than his buddies.Another thing that I think was an issue with such an early start was that the writers didn't have enough time to think of more fun and original ideas. I did laugh but many jokes seemed to fabricated and the main strength of the show at the start was that it was Joey. Which unfortunately isn't enough. There were some terrific episodes and some that totally fell flat, I also noticed quiet a few story lines that reminded me of specific Friends stories but were just not as good. And this is when it got cancelled.Towards the end of the last season I was seeing something promising and it was actually disappointing to see the show end. This mainly came from them finally finding spots for the characters in the story and also bringing an absolutely perfect character: Jimmy portrayed by Adam Goldberg. He was only 9 episodes on the show but to me he was one of the best parts of the show and who could have carried it pretty far. He also gave a great addition to an already great character, Joey's sister Gina (Drea de Matteo). Besides hose two there is another character that i loved: Bobbie (Jennifer Coolidge). She was one of the secondary characters but one of the highlights for me on every episode. Very extraordinary and greatly performed.Other than that the characters hey made were not all that great. Michael, while a good balance to the a little dumb Joey was pretty boring. Alex was absolutely bland. Not that they never had a fun line or story but for the most part I didn't care. Zack and Howard were absolutely useless. So yes, it could have been better but they didn't give it enough time to create. And I must say if they had a Gina/Jimmy spin off with some Bobby I would have loved watching it.
jts0405 I personally was never a huge fan of the show Friends. It was never my favorite show but I did watch it when nothing else was on at the time. When I saw that Matt LeBlanc was getting his own show as Joey I thought that he was going to possibly get his big break. When I caught the first episode and saw how bad it was I literally wanted to write a letter to the creator of the series to explain to them how badly they made this show. I thought it would be good for a laugh or to because Joey was the funniest character on Friends, but boy was I dead wrong. This movie really just dragged down the reputation of that character and made him look terrible. It was honestly painful to watch this.
