In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

This series is one of the most engaging, intelligent, and amusing murder-mystery shows that I have seen on TV. I wish there were more series like this one that combines intelligent writing with humor.

I grew up as a massive fan of Jonathan Creek. The first three series of the show are unbeatable TV and there has been nothing like it since they were created. The cast, story lines and mysteries in each episode are genius. I would definitely recommend the first 3 series and rate them as 10/10.Series 4 is similarly good although not quite the same without Caroline Quentin. Perhaps series 4 is a 9/10.I cannot be as positive about episodes beyond series 4. In some episodes there is practically no mystery or intrigue at all. Jonathan Creek himself is a changed character and has lost all the enigmatic aura that first drawn me to him as the main protagonist. I was shocked at times at how poor some of the most recent episodes were.So what would have been a 10/10 review has become a 7 due to woeful recent episodes. Such a shame!

Having got to know about this gem recently, I bought the DVD set and watched all episodes over 4-5 days and I have to say this is one of the best Mystery shows I have ever seen. The main character played by Alan Davies is believable and as mentioned earlier the only bad thing about this TV show is that it only has 27 episodes. How does Jonathan Creek solve seemingly impossible crimes, well you will have to just watch one episode and be mesmerized. There are very few shows with the same theme and only wish the 2013 episode (just announced) will be as good if not better.10/10 Highly recommended, a must watch :)

The first episode I saw of 'Jonathan Creek' was called 'The House of Monkeys' with Annette Crosbie guest-starring. I remembered that show and watched it several times as I had taped it. It was the only episode I managed to catch but I always wanted to gather the entire series in so I could watch them. I recognized it as being far above the standard fare even for British TV let alone the wretched U.S. television product.I finally got around to buying the dvds of the first 3 seasons, the 4th not yet available in the states. I have watched them now and have to confess I experienced a growing disappointment as the series went on. I still like the character Jonathan Creek a lot but his side-kick Maddy became a bit of an obnoxious kvetch, and by the 3rd season had become more of a liability than an asset. The long-awaited (by Maddy) sexual connection with Jonathan finally happens, by which point I can see no attraction between the two characters at all. In fact, Jonathan has always struck me as possibly gay, his few encounters with women being of a decidedly strange quality. But that is not important. Creek is a fascinating and engaging character and I enjoyed Alan Davies's performance to the very end of season three, and I look forward to buying season 4 with Julia Sawalha replacing Caroline Quentin who has gone on to deservedly better things. The plots, after about the first 8, became more and more outlandish and improbable, and, frankly, boring. But it's still a series that stands above most others and I will most likely watch it again and again just for Alan Davies diffidence and rather androgynous charm.
