Colibel Terrible acting, screenplay and direction.
Libramedi Intense, gripping, stylish and poignant
Merolliv I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
celina-r-greene SPOILER: To any lgbt people or allies wanting watch this...don't. It's disgusting and cheap. You get lured in only to find out that obviously because the killer is transgender and has been rejected by some guys that she wants to go on a crazed killing spree. good times. It's an old school plot twist. SURPRISE! IT'S THE GAYS!
alabamense The story line is good, but the acting is sometimes too dramatique. Not as good as Spiral, but Canal+ has been doing this type of stuf a lot more than Netflix. One quibble point: in Episode 4 they show up at a rather strange performance of Puccini's Tosca, ostensibly. After a truncated ending to Act II, where the Tosca and Scarpia are dressed in Venice-style Carnival costumes and masks, they take their bows, and then the "opera" proceeds with Tosca singing "Voi lo sapete, o mamma" from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana. WTF? You would think that this day in age idiocies would be laughed out of a planning meeting, much less approved and aired.
NicolaiLevin I hate French thrillers: They overdo the settings (think of the ridiculous mountain university campus in the Crimson Rivers), they overdo personal drama and problems of their protagonists (only beaten by the Swedish in this area) and they are just not gripping. Not this one. I didn't want to but had to watch the 6 episodes in two nights. Yes, there are flaws to the details of the plot (like the über-clever way Jeanne escapes and the mobile phone tracking) and I think they overdid the last episode.Yet La Mante follows a clever overall idea; the cinematography is ok; I liked the acting; the pace is good, the story sticks to its main road, there are no overly obvious red herrings, there is just the right number of main characters. No funny sidekicks or romantic subplots - it all adds up very nicely. When I think of it, I found it remarkable how believable and natural the stark emotional conflict between serial-murder-mum and cop-son was outlined and played. It was fun to watch. I felt entertained and thrilled, and I am not angry with the writers for fooling with me or insulting my intelligence. There are not many French crime stories which can claim that.
MerchantDigger The gripping performances by the brilliant actors in this series will have you overlooking every single implausible moment until it, unfortunately, all becomes too much. This show has writing that can't even seem to get the most basic details right and the premise is underutilized. If you're like me and forgot to the check the episode count before watching the show, you'll be in a surprised that the show is only 6 episodes! The pacing is too slow to give viewers a clue that they're in for a short ride just by watching the show. From the acting to the directing, this is show is packed with a lot of talent, but none of it is in the area of writing. I thought I had moved past show my youth where I watched awful shows like Pretty Little Liars but I managed to find worse in this series. My rating is three stars because the many talented people in this series deserve some credit. Don't even bother watching this series.
