TxMike I watched this at home on DVD from our public library. My wife watched 15 minutes and left, not her type of entertainment."Last Tango in Halifax" is apparently a British TV series that ran for several years. It features a man and woman in their 70s who, after each of their spouses died, reunited after 60 or so years. What I found was the "holiday special" and later realized it is season 4, episodes 1 and 2, about 55 minutes each, the only episodes of season 4.I have always been fond of stories featuring a cross section of average British characters, as this one does. While much of the story focuses on relationship problems some of the adult children are having, the most charming story is about the local theater production and the 70-somethings scrambling to find the right characters and putting on the show.Overall nothing very memorable, and it surely would help to already be familiar with the whole series, but I enjoyed it as a way to pass time until bedtime.
HDardamax2001 This is a great piece! The secondary characters are the losers here. The primary characters- two elderly people in love. I love Derek Jacobi almost as much as Sir Patrick Stewart. The family of these two are not having a good life. The Old Folks are teaching all of us that love happens at all ages. It's wonderful to watch and even better when the viewer engages in their love. I hope that this becomes another "British Invasion" like the Beatles and "The Office". Wow! I love the twists and turns of these peoples lives. The British language makes this a Dallas mixed with DownTown Abbey. It's a wonderful piece about love, friendship and marriage. One of the secondary characters says, " I don't know what know what normal relationships are like. I've seen them but I don't know how to do them." My advice- watch the older folks because they know how to do this thing crazy little thing called love. I'm on Season 1-EP 4 and I'm looking at a guilty pleasure that. I can watch with my tea finger out. I'm feeling this nice British escape from my affinity for "Empire". Ya' know, now that I think about it-"Empire" might run a close 2nd because the lead older female says " I can be quite romantic when I want to be". Know what Mum? I believe you and I'm willing to watch your love bloom with your beau from 60 years ago that you just reunited with. I like watching older people fund and mature love. It helps me to understand my gifting and I'm not even 60.😇
MartinHafer I will tell you up front that I have not seen every episode of the series and when I have, I'll be sure to update this review."Last Tango in Halifax" is poorly named, as for the longest time I wondered why a British series was set in Canada. After all, when most folks hear 'Halifax', they definitely think about this big town in the maritime provinces in Canada. But this Halifax is in the English countryside and it's the setting for this odd show. I say odd because stylistically, it's much like an old fashioned romance novel combined with a traditional soap opera. When the show begins, you learn that Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid) are both widowers and haven't seen each other in 60 years. However, both their grandsons got them on Facebook and through Facebook they both located each other and have now arranged to meet. Their meeting is a doozy, as they soon learn that when they last saw each other, it was just before Celia and her family moved away...and Celia left a letter with her best friend to give to Alan. Unfortunately, the 'friend' never gave Alan the letter and eventually married Alan! Talk about a betrayal. But it's all water under the bridge and the pair now take up where they left off...and decide to get married on this first date! It's naturally a shock to their families...and it comes off like a very cute and endearing romance novel. As for the soapy elements, these come into play when it comes to the pair's families. Bisexuality, alcoholism, an affair with a VERY young man, suicides and more all soon rear their ugly heads and the show DEFINITELY is not dull!! Soapy...and then some! The overall effect is very good. Despite being very contrived and crazy due to all the soapiness, it works well due to the excellent writing. The characters (especially Celia and Alan) are very real and likable and the show keeps you interested. So far, I am hooked...let's hope it lasts.UPDATE: I have watched the series through season 3. Generally, I am still enjoying the show but in some ways the writing is at times disappointing. A few of the characters seem to have little reason to be there (such as Caroline's ex--he has no logical reason to be in the show any longer) and it is a bit tiresome seeing Gillian act stupidly again and again. But despite these complaints, you do find yourself sucked into the show and you cannot stop watching.
