I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

Watching this extraordinary series for the second time - and, unexpectedly, a binge event. It is even better a second time. But what I wanted to add, for you fans out there, the beer bottle Teddy Jr. puts on the table in Season 4 is a Georgia brand called Terrapin Hopsecutioner. I thought that was a fun fact, and wily of the producers. Long live Daniel Holden!

Manager: "I'm just gonna cut to the chase, Dan." Daniel Holden: "Okay, sure. Manager: "We're giving you another raise. It's not a lot. 15 cents more, puts you up to an even $8." Daniel Holden: "That's not nothing, Julian." Manager: "Do you like me, Dan?" Daniel Holden: "In what way?" Manager: "As a boss." Daniel Holden: "I hadn't really thought about it, to be honest." Manager: "Interesting." Daniel Holden: "Should I?" Manager: "Should you what?" Daniel Holden: "Think about you?" Manager: "I'm not sure." Daniel Holden: "Okay." Manager: "But keep up the good work." Daniel Holden: "I'll do my best."The above is an excerpt from the life and times of Daniel Holden. Death row inmate and convicted murderer
.or is he? This is the premise of the fantastic television series Rectify from creator Ray McKinnon and Sundance television. Daniel Holden, at age 18, is tried and convicted of raping and murdering his teenage love interest Hanna Dean and sentenced to death in the small fictional town of Paulie, Georgia. In the first episode we learn that due to new DNA evidence, Daniel's sentence is vacated and he is released from prison, and that is where our journey begins. While the mystery of the "who done it" is what drew me in, the amazing cinematography and amazing characters is what kept me for all thirty episodes. The depth and development of every character was amazing. I love the way the creators made the overall mystery of the murder take back seat to the amazing story of Daniel acclimating to everyday freedoms that we all take for granted and how his incarceration and now release effects his friends and family in normal but sometimes unexpected ways. Daniels tight knit and blended family is very well done. They are all so interesting and fleshed out that I would watch a show just about them, let alone the added intrigue of Daniels situation. It was so refreshing how the writer was able to get across the profound impact of the events that shaped Daniel, both before and while in prison, without ever actually reverting to visual flash backs. Instead relying on the actors and the story telling to do the job. They were able to do this because the acting was so superb. All the characters were perfectly cast. They had amazing chemistry and all gave inspired performances but Aden Young (Daniel Holden), Clayne Crawford (Ted Talbot Jr.), and Adelaide Clemens portrayals were award worthy and stuck with me the most. They were definitely helped by the directing and the dialogue was so real and down to earth that by the end of season four I cared more about where this cast of characters ended up rather than what really happened the fateful night that started Daniels journey. Overall, the way the show balanced the reality of how such a traumatic experience would permanently effect your every day, while showing that even after such an event, the world keeps turning and life must go on. So all that to say, if you have not yet watched Rectify, you owe to yourself to do so. I will leave you with a quote from Mr. Holden that I feel beautifully sums up this amazing story: Daniel Holden: Because somewhere in all this, I've managed at times to fight for myself for some reason, to fight for my life for some reason. And I... survived for some reason. And here I am, still, for some reason. And me not knowing that reason doesn't diminish it or invalidate it or disprove its existence. And that's what I'm going with today, Mr. Stern. No promises beyond that.

It's hard to fathom how this show ended so soon when we still have inane reality shows going into their 10th season, but it is probably more a link to what much of television's audience has grown used to. This show, from beginning to end, was nothing short of brilliant. The cast was perfect. Aden Young made my heart break every time he was on screen without even saying one word.I should have prefaced this with the understanding that I watch little TV. I just can't tolerate most of it. I came across this show by accident one evening and I was immediately mesmerized. The depth of the characters is so profound, one could drown in the anguish and longing they evince. I did not feel I was watching a television show so much as watching unfold a profoundly moving and heartbreaking journey of an innocent man, a wrongful conviction, and the torment of a family. I have never felt so bereft that it came to an end after such a short run, but it is, after all, a commentary on what so many have come to expect from "entertainment." How unspeakably sad.
