Synopsis

The story of a young group of siblings pretty much abandoned by their parents, surviving by their wits - and humor - on a rough Manchester council estate. Whilst they won't admit it, they need help and find it in Steve, a young middle class lad who falls for Fiona, the oldest sibling, and increasingly finds himself drawn to this unconventional and unique family. Anarchic family life seen through the eyes of an exceptionally bright fifteen year old, who struggles to come of age in the context of his belligerent father, closeted brother, psychotic sister and internet porn star neighbors.

Diagonaldi Very well executed
CommentsXp Best movie ever!
Kimball Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Darin One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
Ghenghy Quirky and inventive, yes. Entertaining, somewhat.Look, I lived and worked in the UK for 3 years, but I cant understand bloody half of what these people are saying. I may be somewhat jaded since I was introduced to this series via the Showtime version, which IMHO is a far superior implementation than the original, and if you haven't seen it yet you need to check it out cause its the best thing thats happened to cable since the Sopranos. The only reason I was able to follow the storyline in this series is because of my familiarity with the US version. It basically follows the same plot lines, in different sequence, but without that baseline, I never would have known what the hell was going on here. One of the biggest issues with this show is the character Frank McEvoy is just not likable at all. He's a total scumbag with no redeeming value whatsoever, compare that to the Bill Macy character on Showtime, who is also a total scumbag, but with charm and a certain appeal. Anyway, I could go on and on but I wont. One reviewer mentioned the fact that this cast is much less attractive than the US cast, and thats putting it nicely, they are hideously ugly. Bottom line, this is not a show that will appeal to a mass US audience, primarily due to the language and cultural barrier. This thing has very limited niche appeal, but if you love British cinema or BBC telecasts then it may be worth checking out. Thats not a money back guarantee.
Inda_Rebel This has got to be watched. I've found what I've been looking for. I find this work, better than any films coming out. Better than any programming from the United States or Britain. This is what moving image production can be. You would never find a bloke walking into a pub asking for e's every other week in any series of films, or on a cheesy American program or on any British program. It is unheard of. It makes American programming and film industry look cheesy. It's much more realistic and better in general than any other program on British TV. Better than any films coming out. The ingredients for this program are: *e*, *r***, ******c* and a **a*. Paul Abbott is a true visionary.* = me to know
Barry When Shameless first bounced onto channel 4 in 2004 i was hooked and i thought the show was hilarious and funny as well as being very mellow-dramatic. It was a perfect combination of a family living in Manchester where the dad (Frank) is a raving alcoholic and its his daughter Fiona who has to support the family of 6 children. Gerrard Kearnes', character Ian is brilliant as the closet gay and the family are brilliant complete with 2 dysfunctional neighbours (Kev and Veronica) and an Anti-social shopkeeper (Yvonne)Although after watching a couple of episodes from series 4 i cant help but think that this show seriously needs to be cancelled. With Frank seemingly less drunk than he ever was and with no Sheila, Kev or Veronica, i cant see this show lasting any longer, but it was fantastic up until they decided on series 4!
thomasx7 Shameless is the funniest show on TV. The Gallagher kids have a chronic drunk as a father and a self-pitying mother who deserted them, instead of falling apart they have successfully stayed together and retained a close bond. It would be so easy to have made a show using the same characters and turned it into some sad soap opera portraying them as depressed poverty stricken people who would never achieve anything, instead all the characters are intelligent, extremely funny, creative and determined to succeed. Reading this back it doesn't do the show justice - you need to see it to appreciate it. Its hard to even to be mad at Frank who can be such a jerk but obviously loves his kids and Sheilia who is very kind and as nutty as a fruit cake. The neighbours Kev, Veronica and Marty are the best neighbours you could get (I'd love to live in their neighbourhood). People who are offended by bad language, sex and naked bums should go and get a life. You can not miss this show its the best of the best of the best.
