Truly Dreadful Film
Titreenp
SERIOUSLY. This is what the crap Hollywood still puts out?
Tedfoldol
everything you have heard about this movie is true.
Doomtomylo
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

This opinion is based on having seen about 3-4 episodes, and I can only hope that my impression of this show improves with the following episodes. The show itself is OK. The story (and back story) is somewhat engaging and the milieu is kind of interesting. What I don't like about the format so far, is the device of using Joey Ice Cream as a story telling device. He suddenly pops into scenes without real explanation (I assume that he's lying) and I can only hope that his function will pay off later in the show. Right now, it just seems contrived and a conscious effort on behalf of the creators of the show trying to distinguish it from the plethora of shows portraying criminals. The biggest problem for me is the casting. Jonathan Tucker playing Tommy Donnelly is totally miscast. He has a kind of dopey look to him and I don't buy it for a second when he's trying to "act" tough. He's constantly overacting, pulling his best faces trying to look mean. He couldn't be more wrong for The Black Donnelly's. Had he been a minor player I could have lived with it, but since the story revolves around him, I'm getting very close to turning the show off for good, since I can't stand his never ending overacting. The same thing goes for Tom Guiry playing Jimmy Donnelly, who in all fairness seems like a poor mans' Scott Caan. These two guys trying to act like hardasses has drama class written all over it.However, Olivia Wilde was a pleasant surprise. She gives a very good performance as Jenny Reilly. And I can only curse the writers for not using Chris Bauer and Frank Margolis, both terrific actors, more in the story.EDIT: OK, so I gave a couple more episodes, but now I've had enough. The two guys playing the main brothers have completely ruined the show for me, and I have no intention of continuing to watch this show. Too bad. The premise for a decent show was there, but they completely screwed up in the casting process. In the future, I will stay clear of anything starring Jonathan Tucker or Tom Guiry.

This is definitely the greatest show of all time. That previous commenter, "lordprater" had no idea what he was talking about, when he said those things about the acting. Jonathan Tucker was great, no matter what HE says. Tucker, as well as the rest of the cast, were all incredibly genuine in their portrayal of each and every character in this great television series. Also, the narration is amazingly done (NEVER listen to lordprater, except for when he says this show is excellent). I especially enjoyed the on-screen chemistry between the four Donnelly brothers and how they stuck with each other no matter how rough things got. All four of these people were perfectly cast and the writing/directing was superb. This show will do everything to you- it'll make you cry, frown, laugh, smile, but in every episode you'll find yourself rooting for the brothers, making you love your own brother(s)/family all the more. I hope to see Tom Guiry in other major roles like this in the future, as he, as well as his co-stars, were all excellent. This is an astounding work of art and it will stay with you forever, I know for sure that it will for me. Well, what are you waiting for? GO BUY IT! Okay so, I was really happy with all the intelligent people who gave this show awesome reviews, but two comments, made by Haji Hill and Moviechikie made me so incredibly angry that i have to say something. How can you say this show is like "Dawson's Creek"... just because it has realistic characters who portray realistic emotions? why don't you ignorant people just stick to watching retarded, mindless, no plot, pointless and clichéd macho action "mafia" flicks with no-talent actors, and do us all a favor and never comment again? This show is incredible and it keeps you engaged from start to finish, but some people just aren't intelligent enough to fully understand/grasp the meanings, morals, and events that happen in the story. This realistic and intelligently developed show is a work of art, so thank you to those who can fully appreciate it.

I'll admit when I first saw the previews for it I instantly thought "Departed Ripoff." Then I watched it and didn't think this cast was going to be very convincing. Watching the first episode I was thinking this is going nowhere then the end of the episode took me off guard. I kept watching the series and slowly I liked it more and more. The characters and the story developed nicely. Most people who hated it either A) were Studio 60 fans (god knows why) B) gave up on it before it truly picked up C) dismissed it has a Departed rip off or D) thought it should either take place in Boston or a few decades ago in NYC. Little known fact that this show was actually written BEFORE the Departed sometime during the late 80's or early 90's I believe, which is why it takes place in Hell's Kitchen. The neighborhood at that point still had it's Irish population before the yuppies moved in. They just updated the time and didn't bother to change the location. It's forgivable.I think if the show was picked up by HBO or Showtime or even FX it could truly reach it's full potential. Why this was canceled and some of the drivel that is on TV remains I have no idea.

The Black Donnellys is an extremely engaging new TV series on NBC. The writing is superb and invites the viewer into the lives of four Irish brothers living in the tough streets of New York. Organized crime is a way of life and any disputes are settled out of court (to put it mildly). The plot focuses on developing the theme of family above all else. When confronted with difficult choices, the brothers' faith and trust in one another empowers them to do what is necessary. Overall, the Black Donnellys is an excellent new show that I would recommend to all. At times it's very funny, but for the most part the plot is serious but not so overdone that it becomes unrealistic. Paul Haggis, well done... yet again.
