Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

This was a really fantastic show that was canceled far before it's time. I would have loved to have seen this show picked up on HBO at the time but it was not meant to be I guess. Instead they came out with Big Love (also very good) which in many ways is not unlike The Book of Daniel. (At least some comparisons can reasonably be drawn though I personally found TBoD to be more interesting and engrossing in it's shot run). Anyway, The Book of Daniel dealt with a great many issues (personal and social), some more topical than others, and did it in a very compelling way. Ironically the excellent messages (those of peace, love, forgiveness, understanding, and redemption) written into this finely crafted show were never heard, by most anyway, over the hate filled cries and narrow minded shouts of the people who claim to actually practice and follow these very tenets. (It is also important to point out that the vast majority of these protesters freely admitted that they never watched a moment of the show, just so you know.) Basically the show is centered around the title character Father Daniel Webster (Played expertly well by Aidan Quinn) and how he looks to Jesus Christ (Played by Garret Dillahunt) for guidance and support in what are very troubled times for himself and his family. (I guess the big stink here was that TBoD actually had an actor play Jesus Christ because a Priest turning to the Lord in times of need isn't exactly a news flash or earth shattering event even to the dimmest bulb. At any rate I felt Dillahunt actually did a good job in the role and the talks between the two characters really played rather well and helped, I felt, show the bond between this man and his God. It showed me how very personal the connection between man and God could be and it also worked well as a device because it allowed the viewer to better understand the thoughts and motivations behind the title character of Daniel. To draw a quick Shakespearian analogy the character of Jesus in TDoD is used in much the same way the character of Horatio is used in Hamlet.) In short TBoD was an excellent show that was crucified by the very people who really should have embraced it, never to rise again, which is a real shame. I'm sure it can be found on DVD for almost nothing.I would NOT recommend this show to people who are easily offended or defensive about topics such as: Religion, aging, race, sex, sexual orientation, drugs or alcohol, violence, and/or illness as all these subjects are touched on in some way shape or form during the show.

I love it!!!!!! It show everyone as real people with real problems. I love how Daniel handles everything with grace. He is nonjudgmental and a devoted family man. If NBC doesn't have the guts to stand by a GREAT show, I hope another network picks it up. I would go as far to subscribe to HBO/Showtime or any other network to watch this show. I know quite a few people that would do the same.To NBC----you are being harassed by a group of people that (the majority) have not seen the show. Now they are pushing you around with Will & Grace. Come on!! this is America and there are far more offensive shows on television. Stand your ground. You will be rewarded in the long run

Finally, a refreshing and humorous look at religion and the realistic view of a priest and his foibles--including his flawed family...and it bites the dust! (Aiden Quinn was outstanding!) Of course the religious right had to stand up and scream and yell at how blasphemous it is....OH YEAH, like any Church is saintly! (Ha!) This was a well acted ensemble piece that was wry and fresh. I can't stand the reality shows...give me some interesting scripted TV any day. Too bad that some stone-throwing Neanderthals in the Bible Belt took offense. If they didn't care for it--THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST CHANGED THE CHANNEL! That is called "CHOICE"...something that we are supposed to have in this country. Apparently, the fundamentalist wackos want to take over the communications in this country--if they had their way, we would only be allowed to watch 'Leave It to Beaver' re-runs!

Since I write television commentary for an entertainment publication and lauded "Book of Daniel," I was completely shocked and dismayed by all the criticism that got the show yanked from NBC's line up. I loved the show for the same reasons I praised "Six Feet Under" It was edgy, funny, and innovative.I'm completely baffled by the avalanche of hateful criticism of BOD today in 2006. Did we suddenly step into a time-warp and it's 1950? Indeed, it's troubling that in this seemingly enlightened era that a group of incredibly narrow minded bigots can get a television show canceled.Clearly, this niggling gaggle of religious fanatics has not seen Denis Leary's "Rescue Me." He talks to Jesus and the show's typical script would cause a zealot to go mad with righteous indignation. But it's cable and they don't have to kowtow to the moral majority and other crackpots. My suggestion to BOD's producers: Bypass the sniveling suits at NBC--pitch the show to a cable network like HBO or FX. This show deserves to be aired without fear of reprisal. BOD should get a second chance on another network. The alphabet networks (ABC,CBS,NBC) are so yesterday! I really hope the show is reincarnated on cable.Rick Grant
