This is How Movies Should Be Made
Brendon Jones
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows

I finally got to see this series after being a fan of The Golden Girls for some nearly 6 years on Lifetime for a limited time. I was very excited to see 24 episodes that featured the ladies minus Dorothy shortly after the final episode the Golden Girls. I found it a right old shame that The Golden Girls ended (of course I was only 4 at the time...), but I was delighted to see the series for the first time. While Golden Palace is not exactly on par with what The Golden Girls had... it was still nice to see one extra year unfold with them. There were several good episodes in the series. For example, the episode in which Dorothy comes back for a two parter. While, Dorothy has always been my least favorite Girl (probably due to the fact that she was the one who ended the show). But, this episode did something that made it worth waiting six years to see. We finally, after hearing Sophia talk and whine and complain about how horrible Shady Pines was, we finally get to see it. It was one of those things that just make you a much bigger fan of the show. I was like, "this was definitely worth being a fan of the show for so long!" The other episodes were pretty good, and it was nice to see the Ladies bond with Cheech Marin and Don Cheadle, who are pretty darn good actors and rocketed to stardom after this show. I grew up with Cheech Marin as a character in my favorite movie of all time, The Lion King.If you ever get a chance to watch this series, you need just one thing and that is being a major fan of The Golden Girls.

If this series had not been a sequel to the incredibly popular Golden Girls, it might have had a decent run. Unfortunately, the original series was just too beloved, too hilarious, and too perfect to continue without Bea Arthur in the form of The Golden Palace. I loved what someone posted - it would have been like the Beatles continuing without John Lennon. Therefore, it's very hard to take The Golden Palace on its own merits, which are good ones. The show has a good premise. The GGs take over a Miami hotel, managed by Rowland, who is played by no less than Don Cheadle. The chef is Cheech Marin. Bea Arthur makes a couple of guest appearances, as does the character of Miles. Rue McClanahan, Betty White, and Estelle Getty all retain their wonderful characterizations, and if the show isn't as funny as The Golden Girls, it's still pretty funny. Yet it only ran one season, not even picked up by some affiliates because it was felt you can't toy with perfection. The Golden Palace had all the ingredients for a good TV series except one. It wasn't the Golden Girls.

It was a perfectly good series! Why did they have to cancel it. I still have episodes on tape but haven't seen all. I know Dorothy's loss in 1992 was a hard one and I am glad they tried to keep the other three going. Just because Dorothy was gone, wasn't a reason to "kill-off" the other three! I was outraged when this show was cancelled! I wish someone would air reruns like, once a week! Once a week because there were only 24 episodes and it wouldn't repeat as often. Or lifetime could show it after they show The Golden Girls finale and then start The Golden Girls over again! COME ON!

It was very sad when The Golden Girls came to an end in 1992 with the departure of Bea Arthur - but it was some consulation when this series followed - if only for one season. The writing was still sharp and dialogue brilliant and played with the usual excellence of the three remaining cast. Unfortunately Dorothy's absence was seriously noticeable and probably played a big part in it not going past 24 episodes. Don Cheadle and Cheech Marin could not fill the void. The best episode was of course the two-parter where Dorothy visited the hotel.Still vintage stuff but sadly a show that will be forgotten in the shadow of it's excellent predecessor.
