Masterful Movie

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.

While it seems nobody in Hollywood quite understands the vision that is The Orville, let's be happy the writers do. They have created a show unlike any other. It mixes interesting stories, relatable characters and a little bit of well-placed humor into a truly outstanding 45 minutes of television. Like many, the trailers had made me believe we were getting "Family Guy in space with live action" but I was glad to be wrong. The humor is not distracting and done sparingly enough that "comedy" is not the first genre in which I would place the show. It's a sci-fi drama in the style of the original Star Trek. Obviously, with Seth McFarlane as the show runner, it is much less serious but you still care about the characters in a similar fashion. I won't be surprised if the show is canceled within a few seasons, however. Since each episode is pretty much it's own story there aren't many seasonal arcs or hyped events; which means it won't produce as much internet discussion/fervor. Also, the sci-fi nature of The Orville means it needs a big budget and unless there is overwhelming success, networks are quick to pull the plug on pricy ventures.

It's a great mix of star trek with occasional Macfarlane comedy. Good story lines. The cretics don't know what there talking about. Good stuff

That's what I would be saying if this was a Star Wars type show. It's not another rehashing of Star Wars to try and milk the last few drops from Lucas' anemic, aged bovine's teats, this is from the mind of someone who knows and loved Star Trek in all it's forms, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and even the much maligned Enterprise...right up to just before Discovery sat in an inquisition and yelled at Lindsay Shepherd. The question that haunts is me is why, dear god, why did they not just let Seth Macfarlane just make a Star Trek show? The Orville shows that that's all he wanted to do and do it well he has. Flush Discovery down the same pipe they put the Triceratops dung from the first Jurassic Park, hopefully that can i still up to that much excreta and put The Orville to bed, gracefully, and let MacFarlane do what he's wanted to do all along. The Orville ITCHES to be ST:O and I think suffers from the fact that it isn't and can't be and also has to stick with the idea of being a comedy when it really forces it sometimes and those are my biggest criticisms. Give him Star Trek. It'll work, it already is, without the name, only.

I don't enjoy everything that Seth MacFarlane has worked on but he has really outdone himself on this one. The cheesy comedy fits right in and he doesn't overdo it. At the same time of the cheesy comedy the foundation of the show is written and directed like a proper Star Trek series. The feeling of mystery, the feeling of danger and feeling of joy is all in The Orville and in fact, while I enjoy Star Trek Discovery it somehow doesn't have that Star Trek feeling it is lacking something in the writing. But Orville has captured that feeling fully and feels no different from watching the original series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, etc...In fact if I were to draw similarities I'd say it reminds me most of Deep Space Nine as some of the humour and jokes are similar and the way it is written the good guys are not blatantly good and instead everything becomes more shades of grey in some episodes.I am sad that the "professional" critics have slammed this show - but then again professional critics seem to have something against Seth MacFarlane they always slam things that he has worked on - maybe he has done something to personally insult them all once, I don't know. But there definitely is a grudge there.I just hope this show can continue as I really enjoy it and it brings back such fond memories of the days when we had Star Trek TV shows. As sadly while Discovery is enjoyable to watch it just doesn't feel like a Star Trek show.
