I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

Beautiful Music. Tom Builder is very well portrayed. Beautiful scenes, photographs cathedrals, etc. For the first 3 episodes, it almost sticks to the plot of the book. That's as much good stuff as I can put about it.+ The whole book was inspired by medieval architecture. The miniseries completely ignores this. The one or two details that deal with the subject are wrong.+ The main character (Prior Phillip) which is a formidable presence in the book, is watered-down to little more than a wishy-washy simpleton.+ By the last chapters the story has departed so much from the (VERY GOOD) book, that it is really quite difficult to believe it's based on it. By the very end, it simply has no connection whatever with the plot of the book.

First let me say that my review has nothing to do with the cast. Follet's novel is indeed epic with rich character & scene development that is nearly impossible to fully translate on screen. I'm an avid reader & movie lover so I completely understand if certain story lines may not translate on screen, or a superfluous scene is written as a means to arrive at the same conclusion etc. However, too many liberties were taking with the storyline to the point that I starting referencing my e-book...I never do that sort of stuff! King Stephen's delusions and obsession with Jack. Jack showing up in scenes where he didn't belong & his surprising resurrection irritated me the most. Also the storyline with Empress Maude, Robert of Gloucester & ransom/child issue was unnecessary. My critique may be too harsh and imperceptible to a viewer that hasn't read the book.

Right from the start, this series made me believe that I lived in this world. The atmosphere, the immersion, the music, the characters and the story is just top notch! The ONLY thing I did not like about it, were the brutal fighting scenes with a lot of blood "exploding" from the bodies or the heavily sex- and beating scenes. But even so, it made the series realistic and it also enhanced the good parts! Anyway, some might like this and it is not a huge letdown, but it might not fit to a younger audience! (This is why I rate it with 9 instead of 10)I could write the whole day why I love this series, but I don't want to spoil anything. I highly recommend that you watch this series, because it might also become one of your favorites! I have seen much in my whole life, but this one takes the first place so far!It is simply amazing!

As a novel it's superb and it's screen adaptation is astounding. A story spanning a few generations with a huge number of characters, I'm surprised the author could even keep track of all of them, let alone the director and actors. Kings and queens, betrayals and romance are always a very entertaining combination and this one doesn't disappoint either Wouldn't be surprised if it needed a few directors to complete such a huge undertaking like this. The director has done a great job well supported by an able editor. A screenplay like this is a huge undertaking and has to commended. The actors ,have to say , were average but the story is so powerful you hardly notice. Well I watched all the four episodes one after the other so probably could keep track of the characters better, even otherwise you should be able to eventually. Just couldn't stop till I finished the whole thing, was like watching four movies one after the other, though I gave myself 2 days for the undertaking. All in all...a series not to be missed !
