Cissy Évelyne It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
plazaliz I like Minnie Driver and wanted to like this series. Travelers are a subculture most of us don't know much about and the concept seemed intriguing. The pilot was okay, and like someone else said, FX has had several strong programs so I continued watching believing it would get better. It didn't. And still, as a forever optimist I kept hoping it would redeem itself. It didn't. I gave up after seven episodes. The story lines were bizarre and completely implausible, even disgusting at times. No one could pull off the kinds of scams the Riches' were supposed to pull off. The scams weren't brilliant, just really, really stupid. Some of the impromptu excuses they came up with to wiggle out of unexpected trouble were beyond corny, just insane. The British actors had trouble with accents and became annoying. The screaming and fighting, especially Minnie, oh my gosh. I'm laid back and laugh a lot but this was as irritating as anything I've watched and found myself cringing or tensing up repeatedly. Life's too short to waste it watching this series. It won't work for insomnia, but increases blood pressure instead.
moviebp It took a while and many episodes to warm up to this series but once I did, I really enjoyed it. It may have lacked a lot of imagination and gave too much attention to small details but I came to love the story and it's characters. Having been a Forever Fan of "Minnie Driver" I first thought this was beneath her but again, it took awhile to realize that it gave her an opportunity to shine. I love Margo Martindale in everything she appears in and never miss an opportunity to see her as she is always a refreshing and easily admired woman. Just wish this show had been more successful and longer lived. I never knew that "Travelers" were a part of everyday society and while they may not be as prominent as this story would have one to believe, it at least gives one knowledge of the types of people that are always lurking among us. Whether this is as real as the story goes, I wouldn't know thankfully but God Bless Those who are victimized by such people. It opened a new window for me and I came to really enjoy this show immensely.
DVD_Connoisseur "The Riches" is a real treat. Part drama, part comedy, this tale of con-artist travellers posing as an affluent middle-class family hits all the right marks. The show relies on sympathetic performances by Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver and succeeds in delivering the goods. Both actors are convincing as the American travellers experiencing a new way of living with their family. The humorous script is well written, the production values are high...this is simply excellent, original television. It's early days but I'm wondering if the show will last the five years that Izzard has suggested in interviews. At this stage, I'd welcome further series of "The Riches" as the possibilities for the show's development are numerous.9 out of 10.
plhoehn After watching five episodes of this show, I am completely hooked on this smart, funny, intelligent, dramatic and engaging show. The acting is excellent. Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver just shine in their roles as the Riches. It is different, much so than anything else on T.V. right now. If you tried one episode but turned it off - I would suggest trying it again! Although I absolutely loved the first episode, I am finding that it is developing and growing into an even better show now! It is a unique combination of comedy, sometimes a dry sense of humor or outright comedy coupled with some very dramatic moments that leave you speechless. The dark themes of cross-dressing, confused kid, drug use, possible danger and theft are dealt with in a mature, intelligent manner. The show is worth seeing- more than once since there are some comedy and drama that can be missed the first time around.
