Maidexpl Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
Doomtomylo a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Mabel Munoz Just intense enough to provide a much-needed diversion, just lightweight enough to make you forget about it soon after it’s over. It’s not exactly “good,” per se, but it does what it sets out to do in terms of putting us on edge, which makes it … successful?
geordiesdad Considering it's age and the prevailing temperament of police 'liberties' at the time it presents a fairly balanced view of both the rewards and the frustrations of being police. Sadly, like many other shows, the 4th season shows it's ragged edges in scripts that are little more than re-hashes of earlier stories and the 'action' scenes become more and more unrealistic with 5 or 6 officers equipped with guns being incapable of subduing 2 suspects they surprised in the act. All this so the episode could end with the bad guy escaping for re-use in the next episode. The first 3 seasons however, were quite entertaining with Dennis Waterman constantly and consistently outshining Mr Thaw.....no surprise there as the venom-filled dialogue of the latter rings inconsistent with him, far too often, ending up with the young bird.......AS IF! Reality aside the show has 3 good seasons in it and as long as you are prepared to re-hear old plot-lines you will be able to gag down the fourth.
Jamesfilmfan905 The Sweeney was televisions toughest hardest most violent of its decade in the 70s well at least in the early seasons when in the later seasons it got toned down considerably but despite that criticism aside if u like solid writing story-lines first class acting car chases shootouts and the incredible john thaw and Dennis water-man as the two main characters Detective inspector Reagan and detective Sargent carter . And not forgetting the tough nonsense superior played by Garfield Morgan . I recommend u go for the earlier seasons preferably seasons 1 and 2 where the gritty and some doses of humor whereas the later seasons mid way through season 3 to 4 just lose their grit and become to comedic .
herbertanchovy Don your kipper tie and bell bottoms, chug yer glass of scotch and screech off in yer Mk1 Granada (ok, consul GT) and take a trip back to the '70s. This series was Brilliant.and the actual catchphrase is "we're the sweeney, son, and we haven't had any dinner." NOT "we haven't had out dinner yet." it's in the episode "ringer" with Ian Hendry and Brian "shouty bloke" Blessed.John Thaw was born to play this role, I could not fault his performance at all;I did start to wonder if a remake would be a good idea, but no, they don't make granadas any more. wouldn't be the same with a mondeo.
Steve Riley When it first hit the screens in the mid 70s, "The Sweeney" was the first in a line of gritty, violent British cop shows which also included such series as "The Professionals" and "Dempsey and Makepeace". "The Sweeney" was a radical departure from the comparative coziness and tranquility of long-established shows like "Z Cars" and "Dixon of Dock Green" and portrayed a London full of violent villains brandishing sawn-off shotguns, pick axe handles, sideburns and flared trousers being pursued and often violently brought to justice by John Thaw's no-nonsense Detective Inspector Jack Regan and his sidekick Detective Sergeant George Carter, played by Dennis Waterman. Punch-ups, gunfights and car wrecks abounded, Thaw and Waterman frequently getting blood and grime on their enormous, tasteless ties and winged shirt collars as they strove to uphold law and order on the funky streets of Seventies London. Sometimes they'd introduce themselves to their quarry with lines like "we're The Sweeney, son - and we haven't had our dinner yet" before piling in, fists flying, to make the arrest. Violent, politically incorrect and still great entertainment, even after all these years.
