After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

I have watched The West Wing from start to finish 3 times and it never fails to elicit every single range of emotions. I have laughed out loud, shed a tear, and shouted out in anger, sometimes all within a single episode. With the incredibly fast paced dialogue, the wit and palpable on screen chemistry the cast clearly share, it is a joy to behold. In terms of content it raises above the standard fair of crime, violence, blood, gore, Kardaasians and car chases, and instead speaks to the hopes and dreams of a society where hard work, integrity, intelligence, and honour are celebrated instead of mediocrity and presented in the best 45 minutes of TV history ever created. Oh how I wish there were more shows like this capable of reminding and restoring faith in humanity. Mandatory viewing for boxset bingers.

I finally watched my fist episode of The West Wing a full decade after the last episodes aired. AS I look over the reviews here on IMDb it is heartening to see how this show was generally well thought of by many, many people and for good reason. When you compare it to anything on TV back in that era, especially on the big networks, it is infinitely superior. I can't think of any program that was or is more intelligent. Sorkin evolved and made even better TV with The Newsroom which is slicker and funnier than The West Wing but it doesn't top his earlier effort in intelligence.I have to chime in on a few things. First of all, the show is, at least at times, mercilessly corny. Some of Martin Sheen's down-homesy speeches were tough to watch but there were moments of brilliance in the show's sermonizing. Some of the women actors are dreadful in my opinion and the romances were childish and seemed positively pre-pubescent. And would it have been asking to much to kill off the daughter early on? She is just so awful.A friend of mine practically begged me to watch TWW during the nadir of the Bush administration. He said it's about the only thing that kept him sane, a fictitious account of a better America than the one we were inhabiting at the time. I somehow think that the Obama administration made the people on this enlightened program look average in comparison and an actual documentary of the Obama years would make great TV. Of course, as I write this we move into the surreal world of a Trump presidency and I shudder to think about the trolls that will fill his White House (or Trump Tower). To all those who complain of the liberal slant to TWW: get over it. You guys do talk radio with blowhards like Rush and others while liberal make entertaining and intelligent TV programs like this one.

I'm nearly twenty years old while writing this review. I was roughly around three when the first episode was aired, yet this is one of my favorite shows, if not my favorite. With me being as young as I am, it's no surprise when I mention The West Wing and people my say, "Huh?" which is really too bad, because this show is absolutely amazing. Sorkin's fast, smart, quippy dialogue is brilliant and some of the jokes can get you to belly-laugh. When this show gets serious, though, it gets serious. The season 1 finale going into the season 2 premier is the highlight of the whole series. Arcs like (spoiler's) kidnapping at the end of season four, (spoiler's) Gaza trip at the end of season five, and, of course (spoiler's) health condition that had effects all throughout season three. Unfortunately, after Sorkin left the show, it lost some of its magic. The dialogue was slower and a bit more dumbed-down, the jokes weren't AS funny, and of course Joshua Malina's, Will Bailey, who is still a great character and actor, could never replace Rob Lowe's, Sam Seaborn. All in all, this show is fantastic, and I highly recommend it on Netflix, which is currently streaming all seven seasons.
