Highly Overrated But Still Good

This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

I don't know what is more annoying that H.G Wells have a to be a character who invented the time machine or that 'writers seem to like to call Him "H.G" call him Herbert or Mr Wells, and when was he ever a scientist? Anyway Wells has a time machine he has created in his basement and has a bunch of nobles/posh friends around in what looks very similar to the start of Blackadder: Back & Forth (which is probably a nod to Wells in the first place) The Time machine is stolen by "the ripper" we don't have a second time machine to go chasing after him but conveniently the time machine returns to where ever the key is! wouldn't it make more sense for the key to be required for the machine to work? but then how would you chase him? #plotdevice bad science: sometimes the time machine actually poofs out of existence in current time and appears at the new time and location even able to cross continents other times its played out as if the machine it self is static has to be physically moved and maintained while only its contents travel, the writers haven't quite decided and change based on whichever they wanted it to be at the time.there's a weak romance sub plot akin to a chick flick fan service mostly uninteresting and lacking any chemistry.Wells adapts to the future far to easily and the actor who plays him seems to be always standing off to the side somewhere grinning like an oblivious Cheshire cat.I think hiding H.G. Wells works in the show should be cool Easter egg type things but they don't make any attempt to hide anything. he runs into his own creations far too often and its more cringe than a nod.the story goes round in circles tries to make characters complex and just makes them look like they don't know what they are doing.probably give this one a miss.

The 1979 movie is pretty decent and has aged reasonably well. And I know, based on the quality of the writing from many shows on the major networks that the writers for those networks are writing for the lowest common denominator of intelligence. They assume the audience's lack of intelligence....But to make a rookie historical mistake... HG and Jane watching a YouTube clip of World War I (yes World War ONE: 1914-1918) newsreel footage with the SOUNDS of explosions?!?!?! First talkie, "The Jazz Singer" didn't come out until 1927... well after WWI ended. While there is likely newsreel footage of WWI out there it would have been completely silent. Also when HG and Jane go back to 1980 she tells him to mention greed and Madonna, she also says that Reagan is president... Madonna wasn't known at all until the mid 80s... People at a 1980s garden party would not have known who Madonna was... Also, Ronald Reagan was ELECTED in 1980, he didn't take office until January of 1981. The president in 1980 was still Jimmy Carter. An average 21st century person might make such mistakes but Jane is supposed to be a historian. If she's THAT bad a historian, I don't know how she has a job working at a museum. This show has/had so much potential. The acting is even halfway decent and I have to give credit to the actors for trying to salvage something from some truly poor writing. I might try to finish out the first season, but barring a miraculous improvement in the writing I won't be back for season 2.

I think ABC made a terrible mistake. Was this the best show ever? No. Was it the worst? Again, no. I thought the acting was great and really deserved for the first season to be shown in its entirety. Hopefully somebody will pick this up and continue the work. I loved the dynamic between Wells and Stephenson/The Ripper. This thing happens way too much with TV these days. I know there's a lot of competition, but I can't understand why some shows are only given a few episodes to lay the groundwork for the series. It almost seems to me that networks really don't want these shows and do what they can to kill them.Very disappointed.

I like the story line, I like the writing. The acting is good, except for Jane (Genesis Rodriguez) she can not act at all. Her eyebrows are creepy and she is so whiny and annoying. This show would be great with someone else playing that role, anyone else! Other than that the show is good and intriguing. The actors who play H.G Wells and Jack are fantastic.
