Stylish but barely mediocre overall

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Roman Sampson
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.

It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,

Today's Special (1981 – 1987) was produced in Toronto, Canada by TV Ontario. Today's Special is a children's show and is about a mannequin named Jeff that comes alive at night. He is brought to work each night with employee Jodie. He becomes alive when Muffy the mouse says ""Hocus pocus alimagocus!" Jeff has a special hat that when it comes off he is turned right back into a mannequin. The episodes main themes, based in the earlier seasons, were on a tangible object such as a costume or hat and then developed to more complex themes such as wishes and magic and even alcoholism. The cast features two puppets; Muffy the mouse and Sam Crenshaw the security guard, as well as two life actors. Jeff Hyslop acts as Jeff and Nerene Virgin acts as Jodie. Today's Special brought fame to Jeff Hyslop's career as well as The Phantom of the Opera, the production that toured around Canada. There are smaller scripts set in the episodes that include quizzes, miming, nursery rhymes and narration of stories. Robyn Hayle narrates these short films. Robyn was also the voice of TXL the computer, in the computer room on Today's Special. Today's Special is a fun enjoyable series bringing intrigue and magic with it.

Just about everyone I've run into from my generation remembers this show, not exactly all the details, but how it was about a mannequin, and how much they loved it. One glitch--no one could remember the name. We didn't have cable, but Wisconsin Public Television (God love 'em) saw the value of the show and picked it up. Today, I was working beside a woman who has a son my age, and out of the blue she mentioned the show, title and all, and a yip of delight was let loose by not only myself, but the 28 year-old girl behind me. Neither of us had ever remember the name, and here our co-worker had known it all along. I could barely wait to look it up. Now, when's it coming out to DVD?

I loved this show as a kid! I can remember running in from the school bus in time to catch it. I'm not quite sure how a mannequin with a magic hat and a rhythmically advanced mouse could entertain so well, but it was enthralling! If this ever comes out on DVD, I must get a copy! I think I'm going to start writing Nickelodeon every week requesting a "greatest hits" DVD of all the classics: from 321 Contact to You Can't Do That on Television to Double Dare (the original ones) to Pinwheel to, of course, Today's Special! Please join me in support of kids who grew up with wholesome, truly educational television! What ever happened to real cartoons like Thundercats and the Getalong Gang? They could definitely teach the Power Rangers a thing or two!

I'm serious when I say that too. I'm a 23-year-old male college student and there is no other children's show I want on DVD as badly as I want this one. Let's fight for a DVD release; it just needs to happen. If you haven't yet, please go to www.tvshowsondvd.com to vote for a release of this show (in season sets). This show has a small but devout cult following and that's something else that makes it great. It was one of the most magical things that I have ever seen. Everything from the songs and dances to the original storyline was amazing. I used to have most of these episodes taped when I was little, but I do not have those anymore. In the good old days Nickelodeon had great shows like these (and "You Can't Do That On Television"). I've always liked the quirkier children's show.
