I have absolutely never seen anything like this movie before. You have to see this movie.

Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.

I was disappointed by the opening episode, I think the writing betrayed Johnno. He was a thoughtful, sincere character in season one, albeit a little broken. His departure by leaving her at the altar, jailed with a haphazard tryst did not equate to the season 1 character and it consequently resulted in beach party scene that was not aligned with the story. The writing regarding "Puss" made him an all-together hated character but should have had more realistic consequences for his crazy behavior. He portrayed the scheziest elements of a human being. I hope there is a season three that is more aligned with the characters and better demonstrates their values.

Poor writing with shallow development of characters. Production seems low, low budget with some notable talent involved. Many scenes seemed too long drawn out to fill the void and failed to "advance the story." Holly Hunter's talent was wasted on a one dimensional character. I just couldn't bring myself to start season two. I almost gave it two stars.

Neither Mrs. Shullivan or myself felt the TV mini-series Top of the Lake was deserving of being labelled as a crime/mystery genre. Yes, second half of the 13 part mini-series does open up with the New Zealand police discovering a washed up female body on their shoreline stuffed in a suitcase, but the mystery of the murdered woman basically starts and ends there as this is nothing more than a cheap teaser. The majority of this mini-series was really just focussed on the strained relationship that exists and plays out blatantly as the real story between coming of adult age (18) Mary (Alice Englert), her adopted parents Pyke (Ewen Leslie) and Julia (Nicole Kidman), her maternal birth mother Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss), and Mary's middle aged pimp boyfriend Alexander aka 'Puss' played by David Dencik.Mrs. Shullivan and I love a good crime/mystery series such as Dexter (2006) that effortlessly held our undivided attention for eight (8) glorious and suspenseful seasons. Unfortunately Top of the Lake could have been a daytime soap opera as this estranged family of four continued to unwind and we could do nothing more than chuckle how silly Top of the Lake was presented as a crime/drama/mystery. The lead character Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) was saddled with a character portrayal of a woman who was raped by three men some 18 years earlier so she gave up her bastard baby girl immediately and two (2) days later Pyke and Julia adopted her and raised their precious bundle of joy for the next 18 years. Just before Mary's 18th birthday while attending at an all girls private school WHAM!, young Mary turns on her adopted parents and she thinks she has fallen madly in love with the Charles Manson clone-like 42 year old Alexander who is nothing more than a pimp for underage girls and selling their fertile wombs in the underground baby market to the highest and most anxious infertile parents.Don't be fooled by the catchy mini-series title Top Of the Lake, China Girl, this is a daytime soap opera that is deserving of nothing more than a 2 out of 5 star rating.

*Spoiler alert* I was skeptical when Peter Mullan wasn't in season 2..absolutely love that guy, one of the greats if you ask me. But I was not disappointed with this season, Elisabeth Moss is better here, Ewen Leslie is spectacular in his role..Kidman, not so much..but that's the role she's been given...all in all; the emotions that resonate throughout this season are raw and deep!!! Love it!
