Merolliv I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
Plustown A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
Ogosmith Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
Brendon Jones It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
seraph913 I absolutely love this show. It keeps me captivated and on the edge of my seat the entire time. The acting is phenomenal and I love watching it and love the storyline. Even though it's difficult content there's a lot of love and Hope threaded throughout.
trayfifty I do not agree with those who didn't like the music content. The music content just made it easier to attract younger viewers. It didn't matter to me that it didn't fit the time because it's just background music to add drama (duh!). There are many thing that the slaves experienced that may not have been portrayed but none of us, unless we lived the life or lived during that time could ever really know everything that was experienced. The things that were dramatized on the show we well enough for me. If you want to experience more gore, there's always other places to get your fix. The show was entertaining and for that it served it's purpose. I was very happy with it.
larrysherman-00297 For a show claiming to be an historical account of slavery and the struggle of slaves for freedom, this show leaves out any political context of the time. One of the main characters is running for the Senate and yet there is no mention of his political party. I find this very suspect, as ALL slave owners were DEMOCRATS. To tell the story of slavery, you must include the politics that allowed it to exist. This is an entertaining show but lacking any "will" to explore the truth.
bluesagecliff Would've given this a higher rating but the music is out of whack and not suitable with a period series such as this. Using rock music is especially annoying so we've gotten around that by muting when it plays. This is especially evident in the episode Season 1 , near the beginning where there's a social event/dance and Elizabeth does a dance ( as a distraction) to this modern rock music, weird indeed. It was like the scene changed to "just acting".
