It isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.

The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,

The idea of the auteur may have died for some many years ago, but this excellent little series gives it life. 20 minutes or so devoted to 20 or so of the most important living, usually English-speaking, directors gives incisive insight into the themes and obsessions of their movies. Unpretentious, insightful and really useful, with great nuggets from a variety of famous admirers. Hard not to want to watch everything that is discussed. The overall rating of this seems to have been rigged by a stupidly large number of one star reviews; can't see what would motivate someone to do that, as the series is top notch.
